two quick ones here please.

is there a way to bulk change names in aperture? I think no but I wanted to double check this.

also, i am changing file names for images that are way too long. i am doing this in a Project. can anyone help me understand why I now have a File Name and a Version name which are different? I am not understanding this for some reason.

TIA.

The file name is the name of the Master.

The Version name is the name of the Version.

You can rename multiple Versions and Masters at any time.  Use "Metadata→Batch Change".  Use with care.  You can see and edit your File Naming Presets via "Aperture→Presets→File Naming".

    Hi Kirby.

    Thank you.

One thing I am missing though is why for one single image I would have one name for a master and one name for a version if I am looking at an image in a Project. I mean, if these two are different for any image in a Project - does this implies that there is also a Version in an Album? Similarly does the lack of a listing in the Version column imply that there is no Version in an Album? If I am in a Project and I see this (two different names for each) can I tell from any data in the Project where the Version resides?

Is there a proper way to rename both if i want them to have the same name? I mean, I have been renaming some in the Album and sort of naively thought that this would track back to the Master in the Project but I guess it doesn't? And similarly renaming a Master does not rename the Version? Is there a method for renaming both at the same time that is easy?

Lastly, is the Batch Change for /multiple/ different Images? I mean, I am used to using File Mangler and this allows me to rename a huge number of images by just putting in what I want to remove or pre-pend or append. Is this same functionality in Batch Change?

    Thanks!

Jon -- I tried to explain Aperture to you over an extended series of previous posts, and I failed.  I don't know how to do it.  You'll have to look elsewhere.

It is easy to rename the Version and have the Master renamed with the same name.  Just check the checkbox "Rename Master".

I don't know File Mangler -- I use (and happily recommend, having renamed hundreds of thousands of files) Name Mangler.  The general idea of Name Mangler and Aperture's batch renaming is the same: you select one or more files, you specify a template for renaming, and you execute the (batch) operation, in which the template is applied to all the selected files.

    Hi Kirby.

Would it be possible for you to just reply to my follow up? It is very frustrating to ask a question and receive a very good answer but to not be allowed a follow up.

I can't imagine that the follow up is so confusing that it is not possible for you to understand it, is it? If it is could you just ask me to clarify it? This is a text based (primarily) forum so if you are confused about what the question is could you just ask me to clarify it?

I mean, the problem is that what an expert user (you) may find obvious is not so obvious for a new user (me). And conversely, what an expert user may find stupid or ill-considered or idiotic (you) may for a new user be a brilliant observation or a potentially very good suggestion for the Aperture Developers or simply important for others to understand so as to help other new users (me).

I get the part about being able to batch rename (thanks) but /how/ Aperture handles renaming is not so obvious and my questions about this seem pretty clear.

    TIA

Could someone tell me where this is please?

Jon -- I gave a good answer to your follow-up questions.

I am a skilled, experienced, patient, and empathetic teacher.  The problem is not anything you mention.  The problem is that you still don't understand the most basic things about Aperture.  I tried to teach those things to you, and I failed.  I have no intention of trying again.

There are other excellent teachers here.  Perhaps one (or more) of them will give you some time.

I meant the checkbox labeled "Apply to Master Files".  It's in the middle of the dialog that comes up when you execute the "Metadata→Batch Change" command, at the end of the (unnamed) naming section.  (Sections are differentiated by an alternating background color.)

Refer to Aperture User Manual, 2/3 of the way down page 201 for the name change instructions

    Kirby,

I'm new to Aperture and I have only used iPhoto for PhotoStream and ATV.

As I understand it, when you rename a photo in iPhoto it doesn't change the name of the file, in Finder.

It appears that Aperture is similar? There is a Version Name and File Name.

Is Version Name the name Aperture referes to the photo with? Similar to iPhoto?

File Name is the Finder name?

Can you change the Finder (File Name) in Aperture?

    Batch change?

What happens if I change the Finder file name outside of Aperture?

Does that cause issues with Aperture?

    Hey CO. Thanks.

Where is this manual? I have an online version (Help > Aperture Help) which I have partially printed out but this does not have page numbers. If I do a search for Name Change I get Renaming Master Image Files.

Is there a heading for the section this is in?

"Apply to Master" Files in Metadata > Batch Change:

Can this be done (i.e. /active/) when I am changing the name of a Version in an Album or a Master in a Project? I mean, I want to change the name of /one/ of these and have the /other/ change. Can this be done??

    Kirby,

Would it be possible for you to just answer a follow up question without getting into this business about "you don't..." and "I tried..." and so on? I mean, would it be possible for you to just stick to facts about the thread and the questions that are asked? This would be much, much more helpful for me.

Is that OK without being personal? You are a great help but it is not helpful to continue with off-topic items such as these and I have asked about this in the past.

    OK?

I mean, I sort of feel like we all have enough going on in trying to learn Aperture...

These are good questions.  Please post them in as a new Topic.  This helps create a usable repository of answered questions.  Thanks.

This very short post of mine addresses some of you questions, and helps (imho) with your transition to Aperture.

You should try this in your test Library.
