Setting: iChat 6.0.1 (935) with OS 10.7.2 using an AIM account

All of a sudden a couple days ago, I no longer see my buddy list. By “all of a sudden,” I mean that I did not install anything, change any settings, etc.. that I could look at and say “Aha!” What I do see is just the gray box titled iChat Buddies displaying my name, video icon, thumbnail and status. The status is stuck at “Offline” but pops up and actually works. Working back and forth with a friend, he can “see” me. If I change my status custom messages, he sees the changes immediately. He can invite me for IM, audio chats, video chats and screen sharing… and all of those things work.

He says there is an extra icon at his end next to my name. It looks like the WiFi icon but laying on its side with the small end closest to my name. One really weird thing: If I choose Invisible, he still sees me albeit with the empty circle icon below my name in his buddy list and the normally red or green status icon has turned to silver.

Note: All choices in the Buddies menu are grayed out.I am suspecting this has something to do with the Buddies.. possibly a corrupt plist. I did already trash all of the iChat prefs and let them rebuild. That changed nothing.

I am open to all questions and suggestions. (And I have tried most of the things that Ralph and others suggested in similar threads.)

Glad that you found a way to resolve this.

The little grey radiating symbol (A little like an RSS feed icon but grey) is the indication that the account is connected via  Mobile Device.  (I.e. if someone sends you a message and sees this symbol for you they will know they are sending to a phone).

That is not to say that either iChat is not updating the Server properly (technically signing in to any AIM able app other than the mobile Device should return first message status to the computer.).
