Success for me finally - wow. Thank you so much Marcin2011 and saggysax. Thanks for coming back after you fixed yours and giving us info, very considerate. I've been checking back on this thread every now and then in the hopes there would be a fix. I was too late to the party though for this before apple changed it, but when saggysax posted about him/her using an older backup I went digging and was able to do the same.

I believe Marcin2011's instructions are very clear and good - but if anyone out there has trouble, here's a guide with screenshots, etc.

    http://www.simonblog.com/2011/03/16/how-to-recover-forgotten-iphone-restrictions -passcode/

Thanks again - best of luck to everyone with this. I totally agree that it's ludicrous to not have a way of resetting it. If I can reset my bank account password via my email address I should be able to reset this - they could make it secure of course, it's probably just a little too quiet a topic - not on the radar of the decision-makers. But I think there would be thousands of people out there with this problem.

I forgot to mention - it was just like sulli75 wrote - I know without a doubt this is the passcode I thought it was to begin with - I tried it a couple of times thinking maybe I did it wrong then redid it very carefully and still didn't work and then started trying everything I can think of. I think it was up to 40 tries...

The only explanation I can think of is that 5.0 somehow screwed up our passcodes and 5.01 straightened it back again. Can anyone think of another reason this would happen, that is other than someone knowing my passcode and changing it and then changing it back, hmmm that's very doubtfull.

But in any case, I would tell everyone with this issue to go back to your orginal thought of what your passcode in and try it again.

    I'm having the same issue.

I set the passcode quite some time ago when I was fiddling with security (I was paranoid and thought I was being charged by iTunes without doing anything). I've since forgotten the passcode and have 11 failed attempts, resulting a 60 minute ban on attempts each time. I don't have the time nor do I currently have the mental capacity to find this god forsaken arrangement of numbers.

This shouldn't be so difficult. Forgotten passcode? Fine! Contact Apple, have them verify your identity by other means (or whatever they need to do to make sure the passcode system retains integrity) and VOILA

I've downloaded all the programs mentioned in this thread. I've looked at the correct files and there is no trace of the PIN.

Where can I locate it? It is a huge inconvenience to have to completely wipe my phone and set it at as a new device. I'm a freelancer and alot of my livelihood sits in the curcuitry of this little rectangle. While that is not clever or ideal, that is currently the case and I do not have the time or resources to simply 'start again'.

I'm a big Apple fan - wouldn't normally hear a bad word about them but this is really not my cup of tea.

If it is no longer in under Library>Prefs and 'springboard' - WHERE is it?

Kbak - I totally agree, there really should be a way to reset it.

But anyway, do you backup using Time Machine? One of the things you could try is to restore the backup from before they made this change and then use the instructions I linked above with iPhone Backup Extractor.

If you can restore an older backup and then extract from that you should be able to get the PIN. The backup I used was from October and I'm pretty sure this change was with 5.01 (November 10) so anything before that day should have the PIN unencrypted as the guide I linked will get you to.

I didn't have to restore from Time Machine because my backup was still on the main hard drive. But I would be careful if I did need to do this - by checking that crazy long folder name you find in Users/yourusername/library/application support/MobileSync/Backup and make sure I don't already have that same folder name on my main hard drive in that path and if so I would copy it somewhere just in case I needed (unlikely anyway).

    Hi all,

I have had problems trying to bypass parental controls (on MY ipad2) that I NEVER set since brandnew.

As far as I can see it was somehow set when updated to ios 4.3.5 as prior to this I never had a problem but still had never set the password myself.

I have since updated to 5.0.1 thinking that it might sort it the problem but to no avail.

I have followed MARCIN2011's instructions but with the exception of selecting the 4.3.5 file in the iphone backup extractor, followed the path to find a 4 digit number following a T.

Tried the number and it worked. Problem solved.

The password was 2323 and was not one that I would have ever dreamed of or used.

Thank you to every one (especially MARCIN2011) that has contributed to this post, you wealth of collective knowledge is astounding.

I'm not sure how many people this will help, or if will work again, but I accidentally found a way to remove my restrictions WITHOUT having to jailbreak my phone.  I was exchanging out my son's Iphone with a newer version.  I backed up his data on itunes and then restored it on the new phone.  I decided to check out the restrictions, and for some reason, it showed that they were off and that I had no prior attempts made.  I was able to get into the restrictions (and finally see what had been restricted in the first place).  The first thing I did was to "make" a new password and remove the restrictions that I didn't want anymore.  When I got out of settings and went back in, it said that I had 13 prior attempts at signing in, but I tried again, using my new password that I just set up, and it let me in.  I was then able to remove the restrictions all together.  Don't ask me why this worked, but it did.. If you have an old Iphone around, give it a try and let me know if you get the same result!!  Good luck!!!

I am in the same boat. My daughters ipod has restriction pass code and I don't ever remember putting one in. Have already tried our obvious choices but none have worked. I tried the iPhone backup extractor but I don't see a 4 digit number anywhere. We are using iOS 5.01 so I guess I am out of luck? No older backups anywhere either.

I plan on calling apple tomorrow but based on the replies here, it doesn't look like it will do much good. I have had nothing but issues with this thing.

If I do a restore and then set up as a new phone, what do I lose? Is all game progress lost (for those not saved on a server)? I realize I can just load the apps back on but if everything is lost, I am not sure how happy my daughter will be.

Having a bit of trouble with this.. Instead of a four digit code, I am recieving:

    <key>SBParentalControlsBlocked</key>

            <bool>False</bool

I have never set any ristrictions on my device, and yet they suddenly appear....

I have tried nearly everything... Hopefully, I can get this resolved...

    Hi,

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaXtrSHfWi8 on You Tube.  I had the same problem.  You cannot find your restrictions code if upgraded to ios 5 for some reason it appears to be untraceable.  If you have upgraded from ios4 (brought out 21 jun 2010) and have backed up your computer then you will have to delve into your harddrive and follow the instructions on the You Tube link above.

Find your oldest backup in iTunesand hope that it’s from iOS 4, User/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.

Look for a filename starting with 662bc and open it, look through the data for SBParentalControlsPin.  if your code does not show here then look on through the text for the letter T it should show 4 numbers next to it - this is your code.

Hope it helps, this worked for me.

I have found a way to change the restrictions without the code. I downloaded iBackupBot, which allows you to open and edit your backup files. Back up your iphone using itunes. Open the back up with ibackupBot and find library/configurationprofiles/usersettings.plist. Double clicking this will open a window (click cancel if a registration window comes up). This lists all the restrictions on your phone (eg allowitunes and allowappinstallation etc) followed by a value (true or false). Change the restrictions you want (on or off) by deleting the true/false and replacing it. Also edit library/configurationprofiles/public info/effectiveusersettings.plist click save. Then restore your iphone from backup. It changes the settings without ever needing the passcode (which still won’t work). Hope this helps.

ps works on iOS 5.0.1, not jailbroken

Www.iphonebackupextractor.com worked perfectly. It was a pain to figure out but once the program was installed and the .exe file was on my desktop and terminal set to desktop it worked and extracted the files.

However, for whatever reason there was no password present as many people have mentioned, in my most recent backup under "com.apple.springboard.plist"

    BUT

I extracted from a previous backup a couple months ago when the password was on the phone and went to the same "com.apple.springboard.plist" and Boom there was the password. Worked perfectly. Thank you. After 4 months of not being able to use Safari on my wife's phone. Hooray!!!

You need to go into your backups and find a backup which contains IOS4, you cannot find your passcode on any backups where you have updated to IOS5 (don't know why but you can't so if you haven't any backups you won't be able to find the passcode).

IOS4 updated on 21 Jun 2010 and IOS5 updated in Oct 2011.  So look for a backup between these two dates.

Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaXtrSHfWi8 on You Tube.
