I have the same problem since iOS5. I have the iPad zurückggesetztto factory defaults and configured as a new iPad. This also brought no improvement. The Apple phone support bate me to be patient. Whatelse can I do?

As a follow up and, hopefullly, to keep this before Apple's attention: I can no longer write medium to long emails on my iPad or iPhone because Mail is likely to crash and lose the message I was composing. It has happend at least a dozen times and I've looked everywhere, but the drafts are not saved when it crashes.

    APPLE, PLEASE FIX iOS5!!

Unfortunately, I am starting to think this issue, at least for now, will inherently linger. The iPad already comes with only 256mb of ram. iOS 4 already took a toll on the available ram. On bootup, there would be roughly 75-90mb of free ram available for the users. For the most part, this is just barely adequate if one does rigorous web browsing, app launching without closing apps, etc. iOS 5 however, takes nearly 35-50mb of extra ram than iOS 4, meaning there is less 30 mb of ram at times. This means that it is actually on par with the iPhone 3G and original(not 3GS) in terms of free ram, which was quite prone to crashes due to low ram. Other devices that have 256mb of ram, like the 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd gen don't face this ram problem too often, as they usually have a little bit over 100mb of ram at their disposal after iOS 5 (more so at iOS 4).

The iPad has to render more pixels than the 3GS, and even the iPhone 4, but it has only 256mb of ram to handle it. The only long term solution I can see is to wait for Apple to hopefully address the issue with a lower ram intensive firmware, possibly 5.1 update later on. For the time being, the best advice I can give is to follow through with basic ram preservation measures, like regularly closing out apps from the multitasking tray, rebooting the iPad at least once a day, and definitely rebooting it before playing, or using a graphic/processor intensive application.

And, if at the end, the firmware solution doesn't come, in my knowledge I don't see anywhere where this problem can go away. The best thing to do then is to just merely sell the iPad, and go up to a device with more ram, like the iPad 2, which can better handle multitasking, and intensive apps on iOS 5.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS HAS BEEN DISCUSSED IN THE FORUM , AND EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT PROPOSED.

I myself have iPad First Generation. After upgrade the problems were several including crashes of Apps.

The solution is to connect to P C or Mac, open iTunes.  RESTORE AS NEW IPAD.

    This worked for me.

After a short time, iTunes suggested to upgrade to OS 5.01.

This it did and the tablet is perfect.

Oh, if you want to preserve your data and apps, make sure you backed up prior to restoring as NEW.

The only complaint I personally have about iPad is the very poor and misleading auto correction and speller.

    GOOD LUCK for 2012.

My iPad 1 runs noticably poorer since I upgraded (as a new device) to iOS 5.  It seems like anything that's memory intensive (very noticable on large web pages) causes it to crash (app exits silently).  I also get more input lag when typing and all web page rendering feels more slugish than it used to.  I often find myself thinking about RDPing to my desktop machine and browsing that way.

It's not horribly unusable or anything, but it's the only device I own that crashes (and lags), so I'd like to see an update that improves performance or an option to downgrade to iOS 4.  I would gladly give up the features in iOS 5 for some extra speed and stability.  I really, really regret upgrading.

Solution I did it Apple store told me I had a corrupt software upgrade because I updated very early.

solution was to back up to cloud and at the store download a new software update, at home it took 90 minutes, in the store about 10 minutes, problem solved.

iPad is fast again, all apps work, no more paper weight o woo hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iPad1 has too little RAM for iOS5. if you seek the spotlight off the notification center and then disabled it runs much better. you will have to wait for the next software update then the bugs are fixed.

My iPad 1 is also always crashing when I'm using safari. It started after I downloaded ios5. Prior to that, there was never a problem.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Apps constantly crashing ,including itunes, safari, so stopped at the apple store while out and talked to a "genius". He told me to be sure the apps had stopped running & then power down...this should solve all my problems. It didn't, & he failed to mention that this has been an ongoing issue, just found this discussion while searching for more anwers after every app I was using tonight crashed. I have iOS5.01 installed.
