Yeah I know I'm just mad but it's been years dealing with this problem and maybe if we're all worthy they will fix this issue and we'll all be happy.
But it's BS that they can get away with this.
No other company can get away with the crap that apple pulls.
And C-mon apple hasn't even acknowledged any Bluetooth issue at all with the 4 or 4s.
I haven't seen a single 4+ without a Bluetooth issue but no one will acknowledge the problem.

Okay, I've thought about this reply for a long time and now believe it to be a legitimate response to this year-long debacle. I've never sued anyone in my life. But neither have I ever walked away from a commitment. Apple made a very clear and obvious commitment when they sold us these iPhone 4's: that they would perform as advertised. Apple is clearly defaulting on that commitment. If this isn't grounds for a class action, what is.

Am I correct in stating that this is not an iPhone 4 issue per se, but more directly related to the release of iOS 4? As I recall iOS 4 crapped out BT even on iPhone 3/3s models as well. Right?

It's a software issue. I still have it on my 3G running on the latest iOS 3 update. All this **** started on 3.x something when they implemented some software echo cancelation algorythm to cope with echo issues with Apple's own bt headset. That was the beginning of the end.
I don’t know but that would be wonderful. I don’t think that’s though or it would be fixed by now.
With the 4/4s the range is so pitiful that I think it’s a poor antenna design.
Which is why Apple isn’t admitting a problem since they hyped up this revolutionary antenna design
On the 4’s.
I do remember some problems here and there with the 3’s but this seems directly related to the range of the phone in
My opinion. If the phone is in my shirt pocket I have clear quality with any earpiece because I’m only inches away from the phone.
I just wish they would acknowledge the problem.
I have yet to hear a single apple tech or exec admit that there’s a problem.

The best thing you US residents could do to address the problem, is to keep visiting the local Apple stores and let them know of the issue; last time I checked, people in an Atlanta Apple store had no idea of bt problems with any iPhone whatsoever. Please keep visiting and direct them to this and similar disccussions here on the Apple discussions.

At first, I could not have believed that it was a software problem, thinking (scientifically, I thought): "How can software affect an antenna's power?" But I took my iphone4 to the Apple store and we checked the poor range on the bluetooth (I tool all my devices to show them that it wasn't just the device). They saw the poor reception, then reset the factory settings (wiped it clean), and then we re-tested and the bluetooth worked fine! Then later it got bad again, so I am pretty sure that it is at least partially caused by some app(s). Sometimes if someone is telling me he can't hear me well, I close out open apps, and I think it is helping.
But this is a real problem, and, yes, I think Apple stores are told to say "Really, we've never heard of this problem" since I even swapped out my first iPhone4 and the problem persisted...

To OliverM3: if it's a range issue on the 4/4s I can live with that. Annoying, but I can live with that.
To Thanar: if it's a software, echo-control issue that should be easily fixed via a "Software Echo Control" on-off option in settings. Yes?
1) I did a fairly comprehensive test a few nights ago where I tested a Jawbone and a Motorola headset, both of which worked flawlessly on my iP4 when it was running iOS 3.x. I placed the phone down on a table top and positioned my head within 2 feet. I ran various combinations of hard reboot, head position, "forget device" then re-pair", wifi on, wifi off, switching from BT to speakerphone in the middle of the call, removing the case, etc. In all combinations the BT transmit audio was garbled but the BT receive audio was very clear.
2) After comments from many of you on this forum I ordered a BlueAnt V1X last night, fingers crossed.
3) If this BlueAnt V1X (an otherwise excellent BT headset by all accounts) doesn't work with my iP4, I am going to investigate the if's and how's of filing a class-action lawsuit, against Apple, NOT for monetary damages but just that they admit this issue is real and they correct it. I am not a lawyer and am not looking to win a litigation lottery. I only desire that Apple make this stupid problem go away. Thoughts, everyone?
Apple, are you listening? I'm mad as **** and I'm not going to take this anymore. We can do this the easy way or we can do this the hard way. Your decision.

I think we need to be specific here on the exact issue one is having with BT! As there are several mentioned in this discussion. My issue is the garbled (unintelligible on several headsets) sound the listener on the other end on the call to me (out) is hearing when i talk. I have tried multiple headsets, including the Jawbone Era (which has been recommended), but all bad (some worse than others), until i purchased a Plantronics Voyager HD. It is a big headset, but it does work. It now sounds great to the listener! In fact, they say it sounds better than when i am talking directly on the iPhone 4S! Finally, a headset that makes the iPhone usable for me! This is such a rediculous situation Apple has gotten itself into. I have been a Blackberry user for years and just made the switch. Iam still questioning my decision and dont think this phone is all its cracked up to be for use as a business tool for email and phone calls.

Thanks for the tip ilbanker I'll try anything to work around Apple's crappy design.
The Era has been the most usable earpiece by far for me but I'll try anything.
And it's pretty sad that I've tried so many to overcome the weak design of this otherwise amazing phone.
I'll give the big ugly Plantronics Voyager HD a shot if it can return me to a normal Bluetooth earpiece.
Let me just reiterate my mediocre list of earpieces from best to worst that I've tried.
(actually it's not the earpiece it's the crap Bluetooth with this phone)

I would just love to be able to put my phone in my god **** pocket without fear of dropping the connection.
The Era won’t drop but you can hear the quality loss when it's in your back pocket and you sit down on the couch.
Maybe I'm asking for to much? but the free razor that I got from at&t ten years ago could pull off this magnificent feat which would allow me to put my phone in my pocket.
Sure maybe I've gotten married and put on a few pounds in the ten years but c-mon the phone should be able to get through 3' of me to reach my head.
It really is frustrating. But there's hope the Droids are getting much better and wouldn't that just suck for Apple when everyone just leaves their arrogant a$$es

The real he|| of all this is, as I write this response I'm freaking furious that we're all forced to engage in this dialog in order to solve a problem that Apple is either too arrogant to solve or, worse, too complacent. They would do well to review the history of Palm or RIM or any number of otherwise excellent manufacturers that got complacent with their customer base, and subsequently saw that customer base lose faith.
iLBanker, I find it intriguing that some iPhone 4 / iOS 5.x users report satisfactory usage from one specific BT headset model, while others report unsatisfactory use from that same headset, but good performance from yet another.
OliverM3, I commend your patience in attempting to find a suitable BT headset, trying 8 different headsets. Unfortunately I do not have your resources. However, if I interpret your list correctly it appears that you also get satisfactory use from the BlueAnt Q1 and V1. I certainly hope so as I have a new V1x on order.
So, the question at hand is why do identical headsets work for some iPhone 4 / iOS 5.x users and not for others? That suggests a processing conflict created by some specific combination of iPhone 4 / iOS 5.x 'settings' and perhaps loaded and/or active apps.

I made an original port here on apple discussions on Nov, 2008. The post can be found archived here. It had to do with the fact that the person I was talking to was NOT hearing me properly. Nothing to do with range, disconnection or other issues.
3 iPhones and around 5 bluetooth headsets later, I have not managed to find a compilation that works as expected. Even now, whenever the person on the other side of the line is in a noisy environment, they cannot hear me well, so I am forced to switch to the phone, in order to have a proper conversation.
What makes this more frustrating is the fact that after an iPhone restart / BT headset repair / network settings reset, the problem goes away for a while and comes back a few days later. Or not; it's hit or miss actually.
This whole mess started for me after upgrading to iPhone OS 2.1! And it was on my first iPhone, an iPhone 3G. I really believe that all iPhone users are facing this issue, it's just that they believe it is normal to have people say to them that they cannot hear them properly under certain conditions; or they keep restarting their iPhones.
I still believe the best way to face it is to let Apple emploees in Apple stores (and specifically the Genius Bar guys and girls) know of the issue. Apple is NOT monitoring these forums, except from basic moderation. You can also send a bug report:

A growing number of people have been facing issues with iPhone's bluetooth quality when making calls, for over three years now. Seems like iPhone fails to work in full-duplex mode when talking through a bluetooth headset.
You could easily replicate the bug by calling yourself on a land line and talking loudly and longly at the same time on both devices. You'll notice that -on most cases- you cannot hear yourself through the land line, meaning that the headset's mic is being muted while there is output through the headset's speaker. Talking through the iPhone itself cancels the effect. This issue does not occur when using any other phone/headset combination apart from the iPhone.
As of note, this effect is getting worse by the usage time of the bluetooth headset, meaning that when firstly paired it will most probably be unnoticed. Thus, try keeping a headset paired with an iPhone for a couple of days while using it regularly for calls and then try the above test.
