Also have the same problem. 16GB T-Mobile NL iPhone 4S.

The first outgoing call always has no audio. But after 2 or 3 tries it works.

    +1.

same problem.  it's like my mic is muted only during voicecalls.  otherwise, the mic works fine.  happens 75% of the time.  sometimes immediately, sometimes after 10 seconds.

Do not worry. If you have only one problem, than just wait of 5.1 release.

I'm sure most of you know how to do this, but I wonder if any of you have tried it. Since yesterday when the Apple "Genius" showed me this, every call I've made since has worked 100% of the time. I don't know if it's coincidence or if it actually fixed it, but I've made quite a few calls and none have had the audio issue since.

Double press your home button > that will bring up a bar with all of your currently active apps > hold down an app until they jiggle and x out of all of them > restart the phone (this clears more stuff up behind the scenes apparently) > make test phone calls and see if you still have the audio problem.

He said he's had people bring him phones in the past that they couldn't access wifi, e-mail, etc. and this solved that problem for them and so far it may have cleared up my audio issue.

Time will tell, but I recommend giving it a go. I couldn't believe how many apps were running in the background.

I have been following this thread for a few days and thought I would share as well. I bought my white iphone 4s 16gb a week ago from Telus in Ontario, Canada. I am experiencing the same problem with no audio on many outgoing calls. I took the phone back and got a brand new one 2 days after I bought it and am having the exact same issue with this one. When I call out I hear nothing but as I have tested it on my house phone I know the call is ringing on the other end. If I hit speaker phone I can hear the ringing and then when I turn off speakerphone I can hear it through the earpiece. So basically tapping speakerphone twice will allow me to hear through the earpiece. So I do know how to fix it when it happens but it is still kind of frustrating as this should be the main and most reliable function of a phone.

Got my new iphone 4S on the first of January. It is running with 5.0.1 ios version and apart from the problem of no audio on the outgoing calls it also turning the speaker on by it self when I use the hands free that came together with my device and even if I switch the speaker of manually it still stays on.... Some people say it is the hardware and I should change the mobile some say it is the softaware. Anybody knows what is Apples official position on that?

    Regards

    Alex

thats exactly whats happening to me the loudspeaker opens and you cant close it you have to turn off the phone and on again and i got my phone 2 days ago -.- i think it's a software problem since most of the phones suffer from this problem i really wish that apple would make an official statement about this because this is the basic funtion of the phone & we can't do it properly

There is no official position from Apple. They have remained silent apart from some individual genius bar representatives saying something. One would think that 1600 replies and 150k views on the thread would get some attention from the company owning the support site. For me the 5.1 beta-2 iOS fixed this and all related problems. Somebody else confirmed the same here just now.

    We know, what you know.

I can say that the "genius" at the Apple store told me that Apple's position is that they're looking into it being software-related. How this "genius" knows that, is beyond me since it seems everyone else's experience with these "geniuses" has been pretty crap to say the least, and most have said they've never heard of the problem and have no idea what is causing it.

So I take what he said with a grain of salt, but I personally think it's software related becaue otherwise it would happen every time if it was hardware related.

Also, someone said that when they upgraded to 5.1 beta 2, they problem was completely fixed for them.

So, it seems like we just need to be patient and wait for 5.1 to launch officially.

Yes, beta 2. It was released on December 12th on the iOS Developer resources site. This is my first iPhone, I don't know how many betas they usually publish, if this matters. Also I haven't seen any reference to final release date. The phone is working smooth now (since Christmas), not a single audio problem or anything else.

thats good to hear i never had any problem with my previous iphones but a friend of mine has the iphone 4 running ios 5 suffering from similar problems and battery drain so it must be a software issue
