i create a lot of new folders and when i am in a Finder View I can never seem to do this easy. I always have to /either/ double click on the folder that I want the new folder in, get to the new Finder window, and add a folder there - or - i have to create the folder in the Finder window that I am in, watch it drop to the bottom ("untitled", then I /rename/ it, I watch it jump up in the alphabetical list, and i have to go /searching/ for it so i can drag it into the folder that i wanted it in in the first place.

is there a less ridiculous way to do this?

say, right clicking on the folder and selecting a "Create New Folder" item?

is this scriptable?

i mean I just tried what I suggested so I don't look like an idiot and I see that this is not available. am i doing it wrong right now?

TIA!

My guess is that you need to experiment with the Finder > Preferences > Always open folders in a new window setting, as well as with View > as Columns option.

right clicking on the folder and selecting a "Create New Folder" item?

That's Windows. This is Mac. "Righ clicking on the folder" gives you actions you perform on the folder. If you want to create a new folder inside that folder, you right-click (⌃-click) inside the folder and the first choice is, shockingly, "New Folder".

    is this scriptable?

Yes, in any number of ways.

I have Finder set to open a double clicked folder in a new window

    So try the opposite.

column view just does not give me enough space

Columns are resizeable. Drag the divider by its handle (at the bottom), or double-click the divider for an automatic refit.

With new folder getting created on a doulble-click it still requires me to doubleclick on where I want the new folder, go to the new folder, hit the new folder icon, /find/ the new folder, re-name it - and then go find it /again/ when it jumps up in the list to get to alphabetical order for the new name.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

If you look at a folder in list view, and sort them by (descending) date, then when you create the new untitled folder it will always be at the top of the list, easy to spot, easy to give it the desired name.

Use column view; select the folder, move the cursor into the next column, right-click > New Folder

wouldn't it be nice to have a "create new folder right here in this folder named 'X'" utility

There is already. As I wrote above, "If you want to create a new folder inside that folder, you right-click (⌃-click) inside the folder and the first choice is, shockingly, 'New Folder'."

why can't i just click on the folder i need a new folder in and /also/ name it at the same time

Because either you are viewing the inside of the folder or you're not.

If you're not, creating a new folder inside it makes no sense, because you can't access the new folder unless you open the parent folder.

If you are, you create a new folder by ⌃-clicking its background; if the background is too busy, use ⌘⇧N. The new folder is created and its name is already selected, so all you need to do to rename it is to start typing.

it disappears up into the folder so that it "helpfully" organizes itself alphabetically

In whatever Finder view you use, typing the first few characters of an item's name will select that item. If those characters are not unique, the first item (in alphabetical order) whose name contains those characters will be selected.

ok, let me try and make this very reasonably demand even simpler:

    Screen Shot 2012-06-06 at 12.54.22.png

“Create New Folder Inside Selected Folder“ command missing.

No such Service, either. Maybe a folder action? Create one in automator? (I don't see how. I'm no expert.) The missing command should not be under Services, but, as most frequently needed, between Open and Move to Trash.

Very, very often needed. Many thanks for any real solution.

Thank you for making this request extremely clear.  I am missing this too.  I don't enjoy the column view cos need the details and also the column widths are too small to read file names and gets tiresome changing width.

anyone know how of a 3rd party tool to provide this or some guidance how to make a script or program to do this?  I tried FInderPop 3rd party tool but didn't see this option (still looking tho)

    thanks
