My situation is that I had some rules working and some not. I just figured I would switch them off altogether and have them set up once again. To my surprise those pesky rules are still working. I unchecked them and than just deleted them but that didn't help either. What should I do to get rid of them?

I have two verey simple rules done for moving e-mails from inbox to a folder in my mac. They worked the first time round, but they are not working any more. My mail is on IMAP.

From looking at the previous two pages, the problem is there and has not been solved.

Same problem here. After all of the bad reviews when Lion was first released, I decided to wait until they fixed the bugs. Now, 2 versions later (10.7.2), my first Lion install and data migration from Time Machine required 8 trips to the Genius Bar in 4 days. The Time Machine Migration didn't work, and my data had to be moved by hand. I am a 22 year Mac user who knows her way around the machine. This has been the WORST upgrade experience ever!

This email rules bug is at the end of a long list of issues. Apple makes great hardware, but I am afriad they are slipping on the software side. This shoudn't be happening ... especially on something as simple as e-mail rules. The only thing different is that I switched from gmail POP to IMAP. It appears the problem is with IMAP, which is now more important than ever as people grow to using multiple devices. Get it together Apple!

I am having issues with mail rules (mobileme/.mac account).  When I upgraded to Lion I was using Outlook 2011 but was having problems seeing all of the folders for the rules I was using  With Snow Leopard I had set up the rules and the folders within Outlook itself and it worked great, but after upgrading to Lion, the rules stopped.  So I set up all the rules and folders mobileme so when Outlook connected via IMAP it would pull everything from the server.  Some days I would get all of the folders created, sometimes folders A, C, D, the next day B, F,G, then A, C, G, etc. and neither Apple or MS could determine why it was happening.  I setup my e-mail with Mail using IMAP and everything was working great until the last 2 weeks.

One of the mailing had changed their address so I added it to rules (logged via mobileme), simple rule if sent from email@domain.com move to Folder A. After setting up the rule it said it could take some time to filter all the messages currently in my Inbox and put them into the Folder. It never moved the messages and it took over a week before messages were being moved into the folder.

I had another rule to move messages sent from example email2@domain1.com into Folder B.  I noticed a few of the messages were not being moved into the folder at times but was mostly filtering all the messages to the folder. However about 2 weeks I am no longer seeing any new e-mails from this sender. The messages are not in the designated folder, they are not in my inbox, I checked the Trash, Junk Mail, etc.  I re-checked the rule too but I am not receiving e-mails from the sender.  My co-workers are receiving the e-mails still so I am waiting to hear back from the group sending the e-mails to double check that I wasn't mistakenly removed from their lists.

Tim, I like your spirit. Hang in there. You made the right decision to switch.

Rules in Lion are indeed problematic. Call it what you will -they just aren't working.

I spoke with an Apple Care rep. Real sweetheart but couldn't help. Suggested going to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and submitting a complaint. What the heck, it's worth a try.

Here's a solution. Not a fix to Mail per se, but an add-on that is working great for me. Check out Mail Act-on.

    http://indev.ca/MailActOn.html

I installed it last night and it does everything Rules in the Mail app should be doing.

In Preferences, Act-on replaces the native preference pane for Rules and inserts it's own -dividing rules into three categories: Incoming, Outgoing and Applied.

Solved the headache for me at a reasonable $25. Good luck!

THANK YOU!! This is actually what I have been using for the past 2 years. I had to re-install ALL of my apps after I upgraded to Lion, and simply forgot to install it. Yes, it works beautifully. Appreciate the help!

I too am having a strange issue with rules in Mail (Lion 10.7.2, MacBook Pro, 8 GB ram). For example. I have a rule (for an Exchange account) set to move mail from user1@domain.com to the mailbox User1. This rule moves mail from user1@domain.com and if user1@domain.com is a recipient. The only action in the rule is to move to the mailbox User1.

The rule clearly is "If any of the following conditions are met: From is equal to user1@domain.com" is the only listed condition. "Perform the following actinos: Move Message to mailbox: User1".

I will post this with Apple as a bug. Of course, if anyone has a suggestion short of buying another peice of software, I'd love to here it.

I have problems with rules, but a little different than reported here.  I had about 40 rules set up before the upgrade to Lion.  All worked fine.  After the upgrade, I can't change the rules.  They still do what they say, but if I try to change, e.g. the destination for a move, it works at that time, but at some point (haven't figured out when), it reverts to the previous destination. I've changed it a bunch of times, and it refuses to remember.  So, I'm thinking that perhaps some of these mail rule issues are due to Lion not actually saving the rules changes that we've made?  Does that fit or sound familiar to others?  I'm tempted to delete all the rules and start over, but that sounds like such a daunting task that I'm resisting.  Combine that with my employer switching to an Exchange server and my email experience is turning into a miserable disaster.  Very unhappy with Lion mail, that's for sure.

    I have also Problems,

    my rules are like this

Move mails from xxxxx@yyyy.com to folder xxxxx

Move mails to xxxxx@yyyy.com to folder xxxxx

For Incoming Mails it works fine, Emails I sent will not be move to the folder, I  manually have to "apply Rules" in my SentBox, to move the Emails in the folder.

Apple whats wrong with you? Its like Windows since Lion!

Unfortunately, no. However, Mail ActOn cured this for me. Worth the $25. I believe it runs in demo mode for a couple of weeks if you want to try it out.

OK, so I figured out a solution for my mail rule problems, maybe this will help some of you.  My problem was pre-Lion rules did not appear to be editable.  I would change them and if I quit Mail, they would revert to the previous setting.  However, new rules worked fine.  So I looked at the Mail rules plist file using Xcode and discovered that there was a critical difference between the old and new rules.  My rules are all of the flavor copy mail to folder xxx and the xxx was always wrong.  New rules had only the tags CopyToMailbox and CopyToMailboxURL, whereas the old rules had the additional tags Mailbox and MailboxURL.  I think what was happening was either at Mail startup or shutdown the two sets of tags were compared and made to be the same (old) value.  When editing only the CopyTo versions of the tags were changed.  So, using Xcode I tediously removed, for each of my rules, the Mailbox and MailboxURL tags leaving the CopyTo versions there.  Followed this with using the usual rule editor in Mail to properly set the CopyTo tags, and voila, all works as its supposed to.  Don't know how specific this solution is to my problem, but it tells me that there may have been some changes in the tag labeling in Lion and looking at a sample new rule and comparing to an old one may give a clue how to fix it.

    Good luck!

Rules are just completely messed up for me, i had a simple rule to color any message from contacts in my address book green, when applied only about half of those messages from people in my address book actually turned green, so i modified the rule and my address book and created a group friends and family then modified the rule accordingly applied it and every message in my inbox turned green, so i subsequently deleted the rule completely. all of my messages are still green despite many attempts at selecting messages and selecting Apply Rules or quitting mail and restarting.

    PG

Hey when you installed Mail Act-on does the inbox rules happen automatically without you having to press a funtion button.  It seems like the 3rd tab you have to manually set function keys to make the rules happen.

I just my mail to move to different folders when it comes in.

    Thanks

    Mark
