Jan 5, 2012 10:33 AM in response to Brian Obrarby Linc Davis,Then if all the information you've given is accurate, there has to be something wrong with the hardware. You can still get into safe mode by the alternative method in the support article.

Jan 5, 2012 11:10 AM in response to Linc Davisby Brian Obrar, something wrong with my hardware? like what? i had this notebook for 2 and half years now and everything works great. as far as hardware go, i upgraded my HD and RAM and all work great, didnt touch anything else. but have to say, for 2 and half years ive never seen any EFI/BIOS alike stuff. no matter what shortcut/button i press during a power up nothing happens and boots normally. i wish someone has an answer, but thanks anyways guys.

Jan 5, 2012 11:14 AM in response to Brian Obrarby Kurt Lang,It could be faulty RAM. Can you put the original RAM back in, and only that? If so, try that first and see if the keyboard then responds to startup keys as expected.

Jan 6, 2012 7:08 AM in response to Brian Obrarby Kurt Lang,Ah, so it was the RAM. Where did you buy it? If it's from a better company like Crucial, Other World Computing, Kingston, etc., they usually have lifetime guarantees with free replacement of faulty RAM.

Jan 6, 2012 11:18 AM in response to Kurt Langby Brian Obrar, its from my other world computing, so should i send them an email about the issue? couldnt it be that the firmware needs an update to match/suit the new ram? just saying, thanks again.

Jan 6, 2012 12:41 PM in response to Brian Obrarby Kurt Lang,According to you initial post, you have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro, which does support 8 GB of RAM under Snow Leopard.
What I don't know is how the RAM can be configured. With my recently purchased Mac Pro, it was not possible to mix the RAM Apple installed with anything else. If I wanted more RAM, I had to remove the Apple installed RAM and replace it with all matching sticks. By matching, that means same brand; not just same specs.
So if you had an Apple 4GB stick in the MacBook Pro and put in a 4GB stick from OWC, that may have been the issue. If it was all OWC RAM, then I would contact them about replacing it.
