I thought I may have had mine fixed by removing iStat Pro but the probelm is back again today. The display once again will not wake from sleep. The only way to avoid this that I have found is to change sleep settings to NEVER. Of couse this is not a soultion, but it at least allows me to use the computer without worrying about having to force a restart if it sleeps.

I never use a password so I cannot link that to this problem on my end.

I have just done a firmware update that was part of the latest regular software update and so far it seems to be working perfectly again. Both on cord and on battery.... I will keep a close eye on it from now on and keep you updated...

Yes it does seem to work!

Very good sign since everything else i tried never had any impact.

    Thank for the cue!

Hummm, It sounds like we all have similar problems but the causes may be different? My software is all up to date but I am still having the same problem. Sometimes I think I have the problem fixed and it shows up agian a few days later. That has been my issue with trouble shooting this. My MBP may sleep fine several times in a row but then for no known reason, the display will decided not to wake (the keyboard is on and the computer is on but the screen does not wake) I have to hold the power button down to restart. I cannot link and specific app or program to this problem.

Hey vrock, can you tell me which firmare update it was? I have a mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro on 10.6.8 and it was having this random sleep problem. My energy saver prefs were 15 mins for computer and display...I don't know if that had anything to do with the problem. I did the same thing Builder1 did which was put it to "never sleep" and it never shut down...but I'm hoping something will fix the problem totally if it's just an easy fix. I hope you find a solution, Builder1.

it was just the latest software update I have been prompted to do from software update (10.6.8). It has been working fine since then. I don't have it set to never sleep or anything... Hope this helps.

Unfortunately not sure if that will help me.. The only software updates I have are Safari, Java, and iTunes...so I don't think those have anything to do with the computer going to sleep. Guess the only option is to clean install for me...:(

I have actually done clean installs twice trying to fix the problem. The first time i did it, I restored everything from my time capsule, the problem was back right away. The second time i reinstalled I did not restore from a back up drive, I manually added all of my important software one by one and left off anything I could live without. At first it seemed to fix the sleep problem but within a day or so the problem was back. (not sure if the problem was triggered by software updates or if the delay was just a fluke) This problem never occurred with Snow Leopard so to me it is obviously a Lion issue. So far I have still found no solution. My warranty is through April. I guess I will have to take this back into apple a 4th time and demand they fix it before my warranty is gone. Good luck to you! If your clean install works please let me know what you may have done differently. Thanks!
