Freezing while checking email. Freezing when in iphoto. Trackpad not responding when clicking on links in web pages. Display going dark while in battery mode & Apple logo visible through screen. This is a replacement for the late 2010 Macbook Pro which had the black screen issues & new logic board relacement after 8 months and still caused problems but I was fortunate to be able to get my money back and then purchased this new model but wish now that I hadn't. My first experiences with Apple Macbooks and now I wish I'd not bothered. My HP windows vista laptop is still going well after almost 5 years and is being used more than the Macbook because it's more reliable.

What is the configuration of your MacBookPro? Which verrsion of OSX are your running?

Is your MacBookPor beach-balling or freezing up requiring a reboot?

Run Activity Monitor and see what processes are taking up CPU cycles.

If you can reproduce these problems, I would make an appointment with the Apple Genius bar and get it checked out.

Well the Apple logo will always be visible through the screen when there is a fairly bright light behind the screen.

    That is totally normal.

As for the freezing and since this is your first Mac computer I would like to make you aware of one thing.

The way Mac OS X operating system works is slightly different then Windows. In Windows when you click the X in the upper right hand corner of the program you are using that program closes freeinig up the memory it was using. In the Apple OS, OS X, when you click the X in the upper left hand corner of the windows you are using all that does is close that active window. It dos not close the program. So if you have started up 2-3-4-5-6 programs to do something in them and then clicked the X all you have done is closed those windows for all those programs. The programs is still running. So you can end up with several programs using memory when they shouldn't be. You have to actually close those program by first using Command+Tab to see what programs are still open then go to the menu bar on the right side where the name of the program is displayed and click on that name and select Quit Program Name. Or once the name of the program is in the menu bar press Command+Q (Quit) to close that program.

Get in the habbit of always using that keyboard shortcut when you are done using a program.

Having multiple program open will cause the system to run slow.

The hard drive Apple is putting the newer Macbook Pros are of the slower type. Running at 5400RPMs as opposed to the faster 7200RPM models. Why I don't know as the faster drives don't cost that much more. Because of this all program run slightly slower. To open, to save files to and when used as a swap disk to expand on the physical memory in the computer. Which in turn will make the system seem sluggish and can casue some freezes.

So make sure you have closed all programs before opening another, and only have at the most 2-3 progams open at the same time.

Thank you for your reply & I do understand about closing programs in the correct way but as I have not added any programs and have only loaded some music & a few photos and have 462gb free from the 500gb available, i don't understand why I'm having these issues. I understand that the Apple logo will be visible in bright light but that is the least of my concerns but thank you for pointing this out. Deborah

Go into system preferences Energy Saver and uncheck Put hard disk to sleep when possible. especially when you are using AC power. That may help.

You can also restart the system and hold down the D key before the grey comes on.

That will boot you from the Apple servers and you can do a hardware test.

By the way do you have any Anti virus program installed?

If you do uninstall it and see if that helps.

Sorry for the delay but I couldn't get onto this site yesterday (maintenance message).

I have the Macbook Pro, 15in, 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 (Oct 11). It came loaded with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2

It has been freezing up at times and I can't do anything at all except switch it off and restart. It's erratic so I can't pinpoint what is causing it. The first problem started within a couple of weeks of owning it when I was checking my emails and it froze up with the fan going crazy and the laptop feeling very hot. This particular problem hasn't happened again (fan/heat) but the freezing happens from time to time and is very annoying particularly as I haven't loaded anything onto it yet except a few photos and some music to itunes.

I don't have any anti virus installed and am very careful about downloading anything from the internet and always delete suspicious emails without opening them. I don't play games and only use my laptops for pictures, music, email, internet and office applications although I haven't yet installed my copy of iwork to this new Macbook as I wanted to see how it performed before I added too much especially after the first issue when it was just a few weeks old.

I have contacted the Apple store where it was purchased and can take it in to be checked but I just wondered if anyone else had experienced these issues with this new model.

Thank you to everyone who has responded to my question.

As I think Ij said in a earlier post.

I have the exact same MBP and I have not experienced anything like what you are seeing.

I have 3 different virtual machines loaded on it, although I only run one at a time, Office 2011 along with Libre and Open office, Chrome, Thunderbird mail and a host of other software, some that start up when the system boots.

Just last night I had multiple chrome tabs going, Thunderbird mail, a virtual machine running and one or two other programs running and saw no real slow down of the machine. Oh and this was running on battery only, no AC power

I have upgraded the RAM to 8GB and installed a SSD but even before I did that I did not see what you are going through.

I bought my MBP late this past November....it is:  15" Late 2011, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM (factory installed), OS X Lion 10.7.2, 128 GB SSD (factory installed) and AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB video card (factory installed).  I haven't had any issues with freezing at all since I purchsed this MBP.....until earlier this week.  I decided to try out my Wacom Cintiq pen display.  I connected it via the Apple Mini-DisplayPort to DVI Adapter.  Fired up Adobe Illustrator and went to work.  About 20 minutes into it I heard the fans kick up on the MBP....I thought no big deal...probably getting warm from the graphics work I was doing (nothing earth shattering...Illustrator file was only about 15 MB).  Several minutes later, fans still spinning, my MBP froze...mouse was still moveable but clicking on stuff didn't do anything.  I had to hold the power button to get it out of it.

Started back up and got everything going again and sure enough about 10 minutes later....frozen again!

The common thread for me seems to be an external monitor connected.  The computer gets really hot, fans kick up and then it freezes.  I've turned off the "automatic graphics switching" as described in other threads with the freezing issues but still no luck.  I can open and work in the same Illustrator file (and other much larger ones) for hours on end using the built in display without incident but as soon as I try using the external display...I'm done.

Makes me with I'd have kept my MacPro instead of switching to a laptop.  Love the machine and the portability but if it won't use an external display I could have just bought a Macbook Air and used it for browsing, email, light photo use, and music.  I paid quite a bit for the "Pro" part if all I get to end up using this thing for is web, email, light photos and of course posting to Apple forums.

Lately, I've been having nonstop problems with the discrete GPU (Radeon HD 6750M). When using the discrete GPU, my display gets corrupted, usually within an hour, sometimes in as little as 5-10 minutes. I have to use gfxCardStatus utility to keep it set to the integrated GPU, otherwise I'd probably be performing hard reboots 10-12 times a day. Apple Hardware Test shows no issues, and the Genius Bar hardware diagnostic tool didn't find anything either.

I'll post some pictures later today. Anyone else having similar issues?

    Hi,

Same issue happens to me randomly when I watch Itune's Video on Apple TV via Airplay.

    Relevant specs:

    Late 2011 MacBook Pro, 15", 2.2Ghz

    8GB RAM

    OS up to date.

But I don't need to reboot each time. What i do is closing my laptop and when I open it again; it prompts me for my password. After filling it, my session is restored back to where it froze.

    Hope that helps...

BTW, i'm gonna try gfxCardStatus soon to force the graphic card in dicrete mode or integratind mode regarding i'm playing or surfing...
