Q: Disc Burner or Software Not Found: iTunes 10.5.2.11

I've been burning mp3 discs today and I sucessfully got through three. Then all of a sudden, when I tried to burn the fourth and final disc, I got the "Disc Burner or Software Not Found" error. I have tried running iTunes as an administrator and I don't have any conflicting programs that I know of. Here is my diagnostic report. I am running Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium.

Unusual. It's not showing any signs of optical drives whatsoever.

Quickly doublechecking ... did you have "DVD/CD tests" selected when you ran the diagnostics?

Yes I did, and when it came to the section where I was supposed to select a CD/DVD Drive to test, there were no drives available to choose in the drop down section. I thought it was very strange but there was nothing I could do about it so I continued the test.

Ouch ... okay, I've seen that reported once before where there was a physical optical drive failure of some sort (so there wasn't a drive to see any more, as it were).

Have a look in "Computer". Is Windows showing the drive there?

I think I have found what you mean. Under Computer, under Devices with Removable Storage, the DVD RW Drive is listed. I looked at the properties and this is what is listed under hardware (if that's useful at all):

    Optiarc DVD+-RW AD-7640 ATA Device

    TOSHIBA MK5055GSX

Both are listed as working properly.

This is interesting -- I have tried to burn the disc again and now iTunes is working fine.

I'd say that perhaps I just overworked the drive, but that seems like too easy a solution. I've been noticing some oddities with my video drive lately, so maybe it is related.

Either way, thank you for your help so far -- I hope it doesn't relapse!

Gosh, that's a relief. I've been brooding overnight trying to work out what might plausibly be causing this one.

Perhaps (if it's both video and CD drives that are being cranky) it might be worth checking on thermal issues? Have a check of the vents to see if they've gotten a bit clogged up?

For a while I was worried about the temperature as well, but I downloaded PC Wizard 2010 and its readings are all normal, even when playing a video game, which is when it gets the hottest. Even so, how do I go about checking the vents? Better safe than sorry!

This looks to be quite a nice guide for a quick clean:

(I wouldn't clean the fans unless you felt comfortable about getting inside and disassembling PCs ...)
