Did you just download an app on your iPhone or your computer?
Check this thread out -> iTunes cannot sync... apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined.
Try unchecking "Automatically sync new apps" from the Apps tab under Devices in iTunes, sync and then check the automatic option again.

Removing "Automatically sync new apps" did not do it. All apps are updated. All purchased with the current ID. Still get:
"iTunes cannot sync apps to the iPhone “XXX's iPhone” because the apps installed on the iPhone could not be determined."

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (10.5.2) -> http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Did you jailbreak your iPhone or are you syning apps that weren't downloaded from the iTunes Store? If yes, check out this Apple article -> Unauthorized modification of iOS has been a major source of instability, disruption of services, and other issues

Finally figured it out. Some of my original app purchases were for prior OS requirements. When these were Updated, the developer probably upgraded the app to work only on new OS. I deleted these apps on iTunes and on my iPhone 3G and now everything syncs without error messages. I wish developers would state that their Updates move to a higher OS for us with older phones.

I found the answer in these forums but after logging in couldn't go back to it. Remove your iphone from your computer. Go to finder and hit option, go down to library and go to the itunes folder and open it. Delete the files inside it. Empty the trash. Go and download Itunes and install it again. Now hook up your phone and let it sync. It fixes the problem. I re-synced just to make sure it was working. Had no problems with syncing then. Supposedly it does not change your preferences with the apps. I was afraid but I did it and it worked. Score one for Alex.
