I never used an Ipad before today and I did update the iOS version to 5.0.1.

This is what Diavonex is trying to point out to you. This blurb was copied from that support article that you referenced in your post.
Note:
If you do not see the File Sharing section shown in the image below, your iOS device does not have any apps that support File Sharing.
If you don't have a file sharing app on the iPad, the file sharing window does not appear in iTunes. Do you have an app like Adobe Reader or GoodReader or Save2 PDF? If you don't - you will not see the file sharing window.
