Q: Domain file corrupted; can't restore using Time Machine because I don't have permission?

It's very tantalizing to see the backup Domain file on Time Machine, yet I can't restore it because I don't have "permission."  I tried repairing all the permissions on the hard drive, but that didn't work.  Using "Get Info," I see that I have read and write permission for this file.  What should I do?  Is my Domain file lost forever?

Don't despair, solution is near :

    http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/index.html

Hint : tick the box that says "Apply to enclosed folders and files".

Thanks, but I'm still a little confused.  The Domain file currently in my Library folder is corrupted.  I unlocked that using the BatCHmod software, but when I tried to restore from Time Machine, I still couldn't do it.  Does the backup on Time Machine have to be unlocked somehow?

If you haven't the permission to restore a TM backup, then you need to login as Administrator.

If you haven't permission to use the restored file, then you use BatchMod.

If the domain file is corrupt then no permissions will help. The file is corrupt.

Go as far back in time as possible until you find a file that is not damaged.

I did find an undamaged file on Time Machine.  That's what I've been trying to restore, but can't because of the permissions issue.  I didn't understand the "login as Administrator" instruction...I'm the only one who uses this computer...there isn't any Administrator.

Everytime you install software you have to enter a username and password.

That's either the Administator or a user with administrator rights. Each can be you.

    OK, let's review:

If you haven't the permission to restore a TM backup, then you need to login as Administrator. (I'm the Administrator and I'm the one who's been logged in)

If you haven't permission to use the restored file, then you use BatchMod. (Cannot restore the file yet)

If the domain file is corrupt then no permissions will help. The file is corrupt. (the file I'm trying to restore is not damaged)

Go as far back in time as possible until you find a file that is not damaged. (yes, I've done that)

Going back to my original question, I need to restore my Domain backup via Time Machine but can't because the file is locked.  There doesn't seem to be a way that I can unlock the file until it's restored...or is there?

It just occured to me that it's not the file but the read/write permissions of the folder where you restore the file is wrong.

Drop this folder on Batch!od to change the persmissions :

    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/

Where ~ is your Home directory.

And see if moving out the current domain file from that folder first allows to restore the file.

Thanks, that was a good idea, but unfortunately didn't work.

I'm just about resigned to starting over with my website.

    Like Wyodor mentioned:

    This works for me.

Thank you...I tried your settings on the iWeb folder (I got rid of the damaged Domain file that was in it), but I still can't restore the Domain via Time Machine.

Have you tried running Disk Utility to repair permissions on the Time Machine drive?
