I'm not sure that they all convert to mpeg4, but Karsten shared this great reference for .mts to .mov: <https://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/mts-to-mov>
In addition to ClipWrap, he lists ReWrap2M2V (sic, should be Rewrap2M4V , remux, Handbrake, Kigo, and Toast.
In this discussion <https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3132206?start=60&tstart=0>, I've seen Media Converter <http://media-converter.sourceforge.net/> recommended.
I've only used Rewrap2M4V, to mostly great success. My only complaint is that I sporadically get audio ouf of sync with video. (I record mostly live amateur music and drama performances, sometimes the clips are up to an hour in duration, and huge.) I use QT Sync <http://qt-sync.en.softonic.com/mac> to adjust those clips.
If you don't have it, Movist is a good player <http://movist.en.softonic.com/mac>.
Thanks to Karsten and AppleMan1958 in these Apple discussions, and Andy for his Rewrap2M4V!
