I had been debating on purchasing an Apple TV or Mac Mini for my new HTPC and ended up deciding on the Mac Mini.  (This was easily and additional profit for Apple) Now I have everything set up and discover if I upgrade to Lion I lose functionality.  What a crock.  I guess I should have stayed with the Windows PC and built my own system.  So much for trying out Macs again.  Guess I made the wrong choice.  I wonder how much I can for my Mini on eBay?

We should all write to Apple about this immediately.  If they get hundreds of messages from people with the subject "Bring Back Front Row" at the same time, maybe they'll get the message.

I agree completely. I don't unterstand, why apple throws out such an important app and does not offer a replacement for it. I just can use my remote for keynotes, but not for iTunes anymore. Frontrow was a very easy to use possibility for entertainment. So no its gone. The existing solution to reinstall it is helpful, but what does it help, if Frontrow cannot access the music library? And I don't want to downgrade my iTunes to 10.3, we are on 10.5.2 now.

I did it to, when I start following this forum. But everyone should send the message.

    And I mean Everyone.

It's not a solution to crack the app if we allready have it for free a year ago!

They must bring Front Row back.

I admire tenacity, I really do, but do you imagine Apple dropped Front Row by mistake? And if enough disgruntled users complain they will reinstate it? It just doesn't work that way.

FR shared a lot of functionality with Apple Tv, which since it's update is selling well and starting to stand on its own two feet. One sure way to give that a boost is to do exactly what Apple has done, ie make that functionality that everyone values so highly available, but at a price.

I accept it goes against the grain to have to pay for something that was once free, but I'm afraid that's business.

We all know that Apple dropped Front Row so we'd buy AppleTVs.

Maybe Apple thought we wouldn't notice that they were trying to screw us, and we'd just throw them our money.  The whole reason that I switched to Mac was because they gained business by having a better product.  Now, they're attempting to gain business by crippling a product and providing an alternative for more money.  It's a very M$ business practice, and Apple should be ashamed of themselves.

Still, this thread isn't for acknowledging that Apple got the better of us and there's nothing we can do about it, as your post spells out.  This is here to let Apple know that they didn't hoodwink us as easily as they thought, and they should right their wrongs.

    Hi Dave

'Crippling a product'' ?? That's a bit of an exagerattion, don't you think?

But like I said, I can understand the frustration but on a positive note Apple TV really does do more as well, so it's not to be dismissed as an option.

Just one last point: this board is just a means for people like me and you to interact. Apple don't play a part so your last comments about letting Apple know the depth of feeling is misplaced. You can do that through:

    Good luck

    Max,

Like Dave I am sure he found out when he went to the link that you posted  to get in contact with apple. That you keep getting directed else where. I truly believe that apple is fully aware of what they have done. I believe if Steve Jobs didn't pass on this would of never happened. As he wanted Apple to be the computer for the people..

It sounds like to me now that apple has now directed their attention to making as much as they can from their comsumers. I think that the reason there are forums like this, is in hopes that it gets so popular that Apple has no choice but to answer for their actions.. I agree though that would be in a perfect world. Honestly though I am very sadden by Apple. I believed that they set standards in their service, and now I feel like they just sold out. To have boughten every upgrade ,and than my last upgrade to loose Front Row  due to down loading Lion, I believe is crooked. Everyone asked why didn't you read up about the latest upgrade before you down loaded it? Because never in my wildest dreams did I believe or imagine they would take back what they gave you. Who does that?? Oh yes I guess apple ?

I am truly a disapointed apple user. Especially as I have an Imac, and that purely was the reason I bought it for the Front Row capabilities. I probably should of spend the money on something else, which I would hate to say but a PC, and save my self the expense, not to mention the dissapointment I feel now.

    Not impressed with Apple.

How come you publish de Apple remote when Front Row doesnt work with the Mac??

    Quote:

    Apple Remote with Mac

The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos, and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It works with Front Row — a menu-based, full-screen interface — to make accessing the digital content on your Mac as simple as navigating your iPod. When you press the Menu button, your desktop fades and the sleek Front Row interface takes its place to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Movies folder, and your DVDs. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slideshow, a home movie you made in iMovie, even a movie trailer.

I want a solution! I Have a Mac Mini and de Apple Remote and you took it with no warning!

I want front row back! Restore it!,

I`m a Mac user and I Paid for all my apple products! You cant take something that was a special feature for free in the first place.

    Very disappointed.

I'm gonna place a bet that Apple's gonna pull something out of the bag here.

iTV rumours are flying around. I think Apple might also release a Mac app, Front Row-like, that gives the new iTV functionality to Macs. Apple knows their iMacs screens are awesome - better than most (all?) TVs and that people use them for movies and TV shows. Right now without Front Row it's a pain - we know it, I'm guessing they know it too. Maybe they left it off Lion because it would conflict with the upcoming iTV app, and they are willing to leave us die-hard Front Rowers lacking for 9ish months? Also maybe they didn't want to rewrite the bits of code to keep Front Row consistent with the Lion fullscreen API if there'll be a replacement soon. In an OEM app they can't just dodge up fullscreen.

In the meantime I still use Front Row with my 10.6 Mac Mini and projector, but if I'm in my loungeroom on my 10.7 iMac I use the Remote app for iPhone to control iTunes. It's pretty cool. In a lot of ways it's not as good as Front Row but it has advantages too - it's easier to skim through shows, and you can scroll faster through large libraries by tapping to jump to a letter. So for those with iPhones/iPod Touches, maybe give it a go.

I absolutely love Front Row, but I'm gonna cross my fingers and save my agro until this rumoured iTV announcement.

Wanted to add my voice to the choir...

Purchased my 2011 Mac Mini as a HTPC. With the addition of the HDMI port I was sold on the notion per apple's very own list of features on the mac mini product page (http://www.apple.com/macmini/features.html):

    No screen is too big.

It’s easy to connect Mac mini to the biggest screen in the house — your HDTV — courtesy of a built-in HDMI port. All it takes is one HDMI cable to start enjoying movies and TV shows from iTunes, surfing the web, and flipping through your photo library, all in brilliant HD. There’s also a handy control that lets you adjust the output on Mac mini to fill even the biggest HDTV screen. And when you just want to listen to music, you can play your entire iTunes collection through your home entertainment center, or stream it to a set of speakers in any room via an AirPort Express Base Station.

FrontRow was the perfect way to do all they are suggesting in the easiest way possible. I reject the notion that it is to prevent canabalizing sales from the Apple TV, when the cheapest mini is 6X the price.

    1. Develop a great app to navigate media via remote

    2. Add HDMI port to Mini to ease integration with Home Theater

    3. Remove great app

    4. Profit?

I'm invested in the mac platform and commited to using iTunes and iPhoto to organize all my families media but this decision has left me dumbfounded. I did send feedback requesting it be brought back. I think if enough people do so, they just might listen.

I did not upgrade my MacMini to Lion and will keep Front Row with the remote and Mac Office 2008 Media Edition using Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have Lion on my new 13.3" Core i7 MacBook Air w/256GB SSD that I use hooked up to my Samsung T260 1920x1200 monitor using a low cost Thunderbolt-HDMI adapter & cable from monoprice.
