Make sure the box 'Sync with this device over wifi' under summary tab is checked; you device is on the same wifi network.

Shut down your router, computer and Device.

Now restart them in following sequence.

    Router

    Computer and launch iTunes

    Device

Wait for a few minutes until it detects the device and you re good to go.

Connect your Device.  On iTunes left Pane, click your iphone or iPad under Devices, then on the right Pane Summary tab, scroll down to check the box "Sync with this ixxx over wifi".  Then click the APPLY button on the lower right window.

I tried all of the above on my Win 7 64 bit machine to no avail.  What finally solved my problem was this post http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2553 .  It turns out that my firewall had the iTunes listed for the one  found in C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes, not the C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes directory.  Once I added the correct one, all worked great.
