Q: Change telephone number in iMessage

My partner bought an iPhone in Friday asked for her old number to be transferred over to her new sim. She had to wait until today for that to happen so started using the ewes number while she waited.

She reqistered with iTunes etc. Now her number has changed iMessage does not recognise her number as an iphone. When she sends me a message it comes through as an iMessage but from her number that has been cancelled. When I send her a message it sends as a standard text message. The phone number listed in her settings is greyed out, how can it be changed?

Thanks.

I've had a similar issue to all you guys... but my old number was with a different carrier. These methods worked for me (I used the “reset network settings” option).

I'm getting the suspicion that iMessages identifies with some ID on the sim card... and when people change their number with the same carrier they generally keep their old sim, so these methods don't work properly as iMessages & Facetime think it's the same account / number.

Although technically not a bug, it appears as though these apple systems make assumptions that don't always pay off.

I did the same, Turned off iMessage as well as FaceTime, from settings menu. Turned Iphone off, restarted and then turned on both imessage and facetime. It sorted out the problem.

Finally found this discussion.  I tried a lot and this finally worked!  Until now, I could not get the phone to forget the old phone number.  Thanks!

None of the mentioned suggestions work for me. I tried resetting network settings, resetting all settings, change in DNS server, date/time setting but still nothing. It works for Apple ID but does not work on my phone no. It just keeps on showing my previous no in grey and veryfying. HELP! SOS!

Me too, my fried. I've been trying all the above mentioned methods for a week now...and nothing...

I'm on a iPhone 4S, with a Brazilian TIM sim card, by the way.

Anyone has other suggestion? Tried all different combination, still doesn't work.

If I were to do a factory restore and set it up as a new phone, my phone number isn't listed at all (setting > messages > receive at). Only email address is listed.

My phone number works fine though. Phone call, text messages, internet, all works fine.

I am having trouble activating iMessage and Facetime, I recently changed my network provider from Airtel to Vodafone india. iMessage was working fine with the old provider Airtel. I got a new number with vodafone and am using that with my 4S.

I have switched off iMessage and Facetime before switching sims from airtel to vodafone, But now when ever I try to acivate imessage on my new number it is still trying to verfy the old number from Airtel instead of Vodafone and eventually fails.. I have tried it a lot of times and and the bill shows a lot of international SMS chanrges but the stuff does not work.. It is as if the old number has been hardwired to the phone, even though in India all iphones are unlocked.

Then I did a complete reset of the iPhone by erasing all content and resetting as a new phone and not from the backup, now iMessage and Facetime are activated in my apple id but not on my mobile number. The receive at field just has the apple id and not the mobile number anymore and I can add other email ids but not the mobile number, but the message I get below the iMessage button is that activation unsuccessful try again. Has Apple stopped activating iMessage and Facetime against the mobile number or is it some thing I need to check with the mobile service provider Vodafone. (which I and they are clueless right now)

Whatever the issue Apple definitely has to work on making the whole activation process easier and simple, similar to whatsapp. Being charged for international SMS is no fun if the services dont get activated.

    Thank you,

    Nishanth

    I had this problem. My phone was on Vodafone (UK) and now unlocked. When I changed sims iMessage and FaceTime wouldn't recognise my new number. I sorted this by;

SETTINGS-PHONE-MY NUMBER (add new number where it says 'unknown')

    TURN OFF IMESSAGE AND FACETIME

    TURN OFF THEN ON PHONE

TURN IMESSAGE AND FACETIME BACK ON

It came up as 'verifying' then HEY PRESTO! Sorted.

    This also helped me

The key is to change your phone number in Settings > Phone. If it is correct then try to change twice. First to any phone number and then to correct phone number.

If none of these are working...if you know someone with an iPhone 4; ask them can you put your sim card into there phone and change your number while in their phone (iPhone 4 allows you to change number). Then when you put it back into your phone, the number you changed it to should be there! :-)
