Jan 12, 2012 3:11 PM in response to Mark Anderson20by CaliforniaHighwaysGuy,I've seen a lot of posts like this of late. A data point question: What version of iTunes are you using?

Jan 13, 2012 7:39 AM in response to Mark Anderson20by CaliforniaHighwaysGuy,Did it ever work reliably on previous versions? I'm trying to figure out whether this is an issue that started with the new version of iTunes, or has been there a long time. I've been suspicious of the newer iTunes, and have been reading here for the last few months to see if there is a pattern. I've summarized my thoughts in http://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=4747
If it worked with an older iTunes, this could be an interaction with the newer iTunes and an Antivirus causing transmissions to time out, leaving a corrupted file system. Can you use iTunes to restore it to a bootable mode (I'd try doing it without syncing any music first)? If you can get that far, run the disk diagnostics cited in my post to confirm there's not a disk problem. If that's OK, try syncing your music back in smaller chunks.
I hope it helps. I'm not an expert in this -- just another user with a 2009 era iPod like you, wanting it to keep working.

Jan 14, 2012 7:28 AM in response to applemanicby CaliforniaHighwaysGuy,Just to confirm: You've done what was discussed in http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1372?viewlocale=en_US . You've tried a higher-powered USB port and such. You've also tried what is at the bottom of this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17231703#17231703 . If none of that is working, let's think about what common problems we can eliminate:
1) If this problem only occurred with the new version of iTunes, then it might be worth trying an earlier version of iTunes. I've got a link on where to find one in a post where I've collected what I've learned here (http://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=4747). However, if you've been fighting this problem for a year, it likely was still happening on 10.4.
2) So iTunes is out. The iPod could be in a confused state. That's why you do the 5Rs, in particular, resetting it and if necessary restoring it.
3) But as I recall, you can't restore. Is the computer recognizing something when you connect the two? If not, it could be the cable. If you have a different connector cable, I'd try that.
4) Let's assume the cable is good. Could be the USB port. Try different USB ports to see if that solves the problem.
5) If things still keep mucking up, then I'd try the Apple Store, for it is starting to sound if some piece of logic in the hardware has fried. The disk could be fine, but the connector ports could be going, circuit board could be bad. Oh, you have charged the iPod up fully, haven't you?

Jan 15, 2012 9:05 AM in response to applemanicby CaliforniaHighwaysGuy,Then you've pretty well exhausted my store of ideas. Perhaps someone else will chime in; lacking that, I'd make an Apple Store appt. Good luck -- I know how I'll feel when mine starts having problems.
