Q: erasing all personal data from my mac

Hi there

I've bough a new Mac and used time machine to port across all files, data etc so all good there.

I'm selling my old Mac (intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4 gHZ, 2008 Model) which has OSX Lion on it.

I want to erase all personal information and have the machine available with OSX Lion (purchased from the app store) available.

Personal security is my main aim tho'.

Thanks in advance for your help.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

You can't sell your old Mac with Lion on it. Copies of Lion purchased through the Mac App Store are non-transferable. You will have to remove Lion before selling it. See the Lion license terms at the bottom of my post.

Boot up from your Leopard DVD that came with your old Mac, and launch Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Erase the hard drive. Choose "Zero out data" or whatever security options you want when erasing. Reinstall the OS.

When the reinstallation is done, hold down the mouse button and the option key at the same time after rebooting. The DVD will spot out, and you will boot up into Startup Manager. Hold down the power button and your Mac will shut down safely. The next person to boot it up will be presented with the same welcome and startup screens that you saw when you first turned it on.

    Lion license terms:

    B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple- branded hardware before doing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating system software that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) and permanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that: the transfer must include all of the Original Apple OS, including all its component parts, printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the party receiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of the Original Apple OS license.
