Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

You have to shift click the 'Check for Update' or 'Update' button in iTunes (or option click if on a Mac) then select the iOS5.1b3 firmware. If you instead shift-clicked Restore and now have a device that won't activate, you did it wrong. Try DFUing your iPhone, restoring to 5.0.1, then reupdating to b3 using the method I proposed above.

    Man sorry to hear that...

The only good thing about this is that I'm more convinced that the problem is software related. I really hope the official 5.1 fixes it all because it's quite discouraging to continue on a phone that can't work as a phone.

I'm on beta3 for about 24hrs now without any problems.

What problem returned for you and is the phone fine again after you resolve it/them?

Looking good here too. The connection has not dropped once and the battery lasts longer. Without this update, the phone is sometimes unusable. Apple should release this update as an interim for all 4's right now.

None here seem to share your misfortune. Hasn't been 3 days here yet. Will report back if I get strange problems.

I have same problem. I used ios 5.1 beta 3 and everything was fine for about 5 hours. Then same things happen again. Showing a full signal bar but cant make calls , then signal drop, searching, full bar. Im pretty desperate

And I need to say that i have my 4S since early november and everything was fine until january 2012. I only have problems since the new year.

I have no clue what could go wrong

    Same problem here.

I'm using Vodafone, changed cut SIM to Micro SIM, restored the phone. Same result. Can't do calls or SMS, can receive sometimes, the phone searches for the signal constantly (even in good 3G signal areas), changes to No signal many times a day, and occasionely reports a SIM Failure.

The battery life, however, has increased from something like 2 hours in the beggining to a full day, but I switched off everything. I'm now stuck with this extremely expensive wanabe phone for the next two years.

Guys who are facing problem even after upgrading to B3 - Could you Disable 3G from network settings ? It could well be due to the 2G-3G network conflict. I had gotten by 3G disabled by my service provider !

My problems are same , no matter if I have 3G disabled or not. I think that with 3G disabled call failed problem is even more frequent.

But I have. no sim failure or invalid sim problem since upgraded to beta 3. It has been 2 days now.

Hope 5.1 will fix everything, If not I will ask for exchange

5.1 solved SIM ISSUE, but it drains battery fast!

With sim card from another provider ALL is ok, no battery drain and no sim failure.

So I think it still sim holder and/or sim contacts problem.

But I am not using iphone anymore, so I dont care. Thanks apple for "QUICK" solution.

Once they fix battery drain, I'll sell it on local market.

I have Vodafone too, have had the same troubles just like you and many others. I currently have my iPhone in the service for the second time. In the first time, all they did was restoring my iPhone, although I highly pointed out that I had tried that and it didnt help. So I get my iPhone to the service again (quite crossed, though) and now I m expecting them to give me a new iPhone - trouble-free, with the old software version which I ll not update until those "smart" people at Apple solve this issue. If the problems continues, I m getting my money back...

I have had my iPhone 4S for a month now and I couldnt make one call, nor could I use 3G net. Well done, Apple!!!.

I am in Saudi Arabia, me and some of my friends got our iphone 4s from Apple store in usa, the strange thing is the white iphones don't have a problem but the network problem shows in some of the black iphones with model number MC918LL. I contacted apple support and they kept telling me that the restore as new phone should solve the problem.....well bunch of bull s..t. They better admit the problem and fix it or the hill with apple and their junk and HELLO SAMSUNG GALAXY.

Hi, I am from Mexico and I had the same problem, tryed to restore, etc, nothing works, I called apple, said to them what happend and change my phone in a week, they send me a MC923LL model, with 5.0(9A334) version.

I'll keep that version until 5.1 release, i don't want to take any risks with an upgrade. My next step if the replacement wouldn't works was change to SAMSUNG.
