Q: I want Front Row Back

I'm sure I'm like a lot of other people here.   I want my Front Row back.....  

 

I listen to a lot of Podcasts, watch movies from an SMB share, look at my photos, oh and listen to music.   Front Row has done this for year after year, and last night, once I found it was gone, I wanted to go back to SL.  How can Apple think they'll ship the new OS without the media center (Front Row) which has been around since what?  2005-8? 

 

Honestly, if this is some sort of push (on their part) to their iCloud crap, they are in for a rude awakening.

 

Apple should stop taking away our functionality.   This one step forward and two steps back is getting really lame.

 

Plus, there also seem's to be a lot of bugs.   new one for me is then I have my two 24" displays connected (3 screens total).  Once I plug my iPXXXXX in both 24" displays go back!!!   OMG  The insanity!!!

Here is the reason I will not upgrade to LION. I purchased a MacMini and a remote control earlier THIS YEAR and set it up in my living room and connected a 42 inch monitor through HDMI. Now when I come home at night I have news podcasts from some of the world media waiting for me. All I have to do is to grab the remote and I am getting my news updates. I don't want to use a keyboard and a mouse because I have a todler who won't leave those alone. When I want to play music for my child I use the same remote to access my whole music library. My system works with FRONT ROW. I don't want to mess up my system with 3rd party applications. I am very disappointed that Apple took something that works perfectly for a lot of us and discontinued it. I will not upgrade to Lion until it includes Front Row.

    If that's the way Apple want to do businss, then I'm leaving. I've already ditched my iPhone for Android, & tho' i sorta miss it, I'm just getting tired of being forced down the Apple highway.

     

    I don't want an Apple TV. I just wanna have one device running that can (simply) run my media. It worked yesterday BUT not today. That's not business, that's BS.

    I'm still on snow Leopard - just hoping Apple will come to their senses.  Feedback sent to Apple!

    Hey macoholic2011,

    I didn't try this particular post from lowbatteries, but I did try a previous one that had the install file mac-hatter.com.  It did work for photo's and movies, but NOT for music or podcasts.   Which in my case is the most important to me.  I did not upgrade the rest of my mac's to Lion, and WILL NOT unless front work is put back into the mix!

     

    Just my 2 cents.

    When the initial down load of Lion OSX. I tried to research what could be the possible reasons Imac would loose it's functionality for it's remote using front row. Yes indeed it said low battery. So I went to my local store purchased a new battery for my remote. When I replaced it with a new battery from the package. I was dumbfounded to find out that the remote was still not working. Only to discover after the point that apparently it was taken away. I wished I known this before downloading Lion OSX. I just assumed that because this was a function that I already paid for, it wouldn't be taken away.

    I hope that that front row is brought back.

    I have given up trying to access my iTunes music for now. I am running Front Row under Lion for other reasons:

     

    Movies and TV shows - within the <home>/Movie folder I have created aliases to the drives/folders that have my videos (normally this is done through iTunes). The FR menu sequence is: Movies - Movies Folder - <alias folder> - video. Note that DRM videos might not work (I don't have any to test)

     

    Movie Trailers work

     

    Photos works for access to the iPhoto library

     

    I have encountered  problems with starting Front Row under Lion. Sometimes the Apple Remote

    does not work. I find I need to open the CoreServices/Front Row.app and then the Applications/Front Row.app usually works. After this the Apple Remote can be used to open Front Row. Strange...

    I don't want to stream music wirelessly by way of Apple TV.  I used a direct connection from my MB Pro to my very decent HiFi system.  I loved the sound and the ease of use with FrontRow.  Wireless streaming is a bit iffy if my experience in the past and from what I read here is any indication.

    Apples working on the next OS, Mountain Lion.  Hopefully Front Row will come back as a feature.  If not, I might have to consider upgrading to Snow Leopard instead.

    I used to use my MB Pro connected directly to my HiFi using FrontRow. It was great. No wireless problems as some have had with Apple TV. Now its gone with my upgrade to Lion. Wish I had read some of the feed back before I upgraded (upgrade?)  Now I can't even get back to Snow Lion without jumping through hoops.

    Thanks I Got Back Apple Front Row with your Help on Instructions to get it back on My 2009 24inch Apple iMac Computer & i am using Mac OS X Lion Version 10.7.3 & I Got Apple Front Row Back Now thanks i thought i would never be able to get it back? but i got it back. I Love OSXDaily to, i see there tips every day but must have missed this 1 back in the beginning but at least I Got Apple Front Row Back now.

    Thanks for this info on page 7 I think it was Edumara!  I'm just finding it now.  I'm already at 10.5.something in iTunes.  But since I don't use iCloud at all and I do want Front Row, this is a great solution.  I've been frustrated with the alias solution because while it technically lets me see and play my movies/tv shows, it doesn't leave any visual cues for watched or not.  That bugs me.

    So if I downgrade iTunes my Front Row will fully work again?  THAT MAKES MY DAY.  I'm going to try this tonight!

    Actually, the script I created (along with the relevant instructions) lets you have BOTH iTunes 10.3.1 (the last one compatible with Front Row in Lion) AND iTunes 10.4.x or 10.5.x (I don't know about 10.6.x yet). The script merely lets you choose the iTunes compatibility you want or need at one given time. You can choose to have an iCloud-compatible iTunes (which precludes full Front Row compatibility) or a Front Row-compatible iTunes (which precludes iCloud compatibility). Just remember not to mess up the iTunes Library file names.

    Okay, 'tard question, but where can I find itunes.app for 10.3.1?  I found the package, but it won't install.  Turns out, I can't remove 10.5.  Lion says it's essential to the OS and it won't delete.  I tried with the instructions on page 5, and also just by dragging the app to the Trash.  It won't go.

     

    So, is it possible to run both versions?  I'm sure it can from reading this discussion, but I can't install from the pkg because it says 10.5 is already installed.  So maybe I can just run the app?  Heck, I'll rename it something else, who cares!

     

    Any thoughts on this?  Or some place I can download 10.3.1 iTunes.app?
