Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

Exactely! Well, in case they gonna give me a new iPhone when I got it back from the servise, I m gonna stick to the old version just like you. If I had known that updateting to the last version basically kills the phone, I would have never done it!

And just like @isowayan said, restoring the phone does NOT help at all!

    Thanks for the info.

Beta 3 works without UDID and don't factory default the phone.

The battery problems seems to be fixed.

Maybe offtopic, but does anyone know if the ios 5.1 beta 3 works for Apple TV 2 without a registrered UDID?

    Hi,

Just letting you know that I took the phone to the service and that they immediately replaced it with a new one (iOS 5.0). I have it now for half a day and it works perfectly.

    Hi,

this is also to else others who didn't solved the problem yet.

I tought that I solved my problem yesterday and really everything was fine after my update of iOS 5.0.1 9A406 firmware which is not offical Apple update.

In the morning when I woke up, of course I dunno when the signal was gone again but when I woke up I looked at my phone and it was no service or actualy it was sim error or something like that doesen't even matter. Anyways, it started again and again and whole day. I turned off the automatic search for network and select the carier that I use, worked well and then afte couple calls again, same ****.

I turned off the celular data which is general>network>celular data> off (anyone who is having problem with the a signal and network drop) will not be able to use e-mail account on his iPhone. So u basicly have two options: either u use phone on iPhone or use it as iPad, iPod and have e-mail account.

Anyhow this worked for me at least for now. I didn't have drop calls, bugs or anything, only once I had a really quciky network loss and it went away in a sec and signal was again five bars, now it's constant. I'm testing it, calling ppl, sending sms, using wireless and internet and etc. and everything is cool.

I'll give u some more info in time.

Someone was mentioning about 64 k and 128 k micro sim cards and bla bla, there's nothing to do with it's a software bug and try this way at least u will have your phone and making calls, writing msg...

    Good luck

n1nja In the spirit of keeping things clear, you stated "iOS 5.0.1 9A406 firmware which is not offical Apple update" is in fact an official Apple update.

Im leting ppl know that I still have signal didn't have any drops and yes improtmant, explenation for Celular data, this option have to be turned off because in this case you will not have any interferes from the other carirers.

No sarcasm here. iOS 5.0.1 9A406 is the last iPhone 4S update that is not in beta. Just google it, you will see.

The 5.0.1 9A406 is for the 4S only.

If u want it and u have already 5.0.1, put ur iPhone on itunes with the cable and press restore to get the last build.

    Good Luck!

This doesen't proove anything, ok there's steps how to do it but when u restore iPhone and go to check the version u will see the 9A405 firmware and when u plug the iPhone and go to iTunes and go to update u will not have any updates. 9A406 can not be downloaded from apple site, I assume that u can see my point. Something is not right here and something stinks...

Update: still with a signal no drops exelent

It fix only the no service and the simcard error, no problem for all users.

Why should they waste people there time with a update that didn't fix anything for them?

As u can read, u have only use the restore to update to the latest build if u have those errors.

If not stay happy at 5.0.1 and update when 5.1 comes out.

This is unbelievable. I'm from Spain. I have been experiencing this problems:

    - Sometimes when I am connected to a wifi network at home, when I leave home, I loose 3G network and have to enable/disable airplane mode trick to get back data connection.

-Phone automaically changes to EDGE or even GPRS when 3G signal is about 2-3 bars or even more powerful, it does at random.

But what's more frustrating!!! Since this past weekend I totally loose any data connection. No need of leaving a wifi connection or anything....it just stops working. Shows full bars and 3G signal but I can't surf the web. Sometimes I have to wait until network comes in a while because the airplane switch doesn't work now ALWAYS!!!

I'm pretty desperated....by the way I am on iOS 5.0.1 (9A406) which is supposed to fix network problems.... Battery life it's so so....

Please Apple seed a decent software update and fix this bugs!!!
