What size FireWire cable do I need? And are you saying I don't need to connect the new mini to anything besides the old mini? No monitor? keyboard? mouse? etc?
To do the initial transfer of your info, that would be all you
need. However, since it is an old PowerPC Mini, you
will probably need a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter or
a cable that has the firewire 400 connector on one
end and the 800 connector at the other end. The two
flavors of Firewire are compatible and the transfer takes
place at the slower speed.
As for the old Mini being a server of sorts, once you set
up sharing and set up the permissions on the folders
to allow access from network, then you should be able
to just keep it turned on and use Screen Sharing from
the new Mini to maintain it.
Just follow this instruction from Apple.
You do not need Firewire to do migration assisting. You can select Network which was what you wanted. With network assist, you can select some items to be transfered. After you completed the migration, set the OLD mini's hardware as a share drive server and on the new Mini's LION finder type in Command-K to initiate connect to server. Choose the IP address of your OLD mini, type in the log in user name and password if you have one set up and then access the music, video and other files on your OLD mini as you have an external drive.
Hope this helps.
