Q: iPhone 4S dropping network and data at random

Hi,

I've been using an iPhone 4 on a Vodafone contract for the past 16 month and just bought an iPhone 4S direct from Apple. It arrived on Friday morning and I got it set up correctly as far as I can tell.

When I first turn it on, it works lovely and exactly as I would expect, able to make calls, send texts and access the internet via the cellular network. However, at what appears to be random, the network will disappear (no bars of signal) stopping me making calls and texts, but still allowing me to access the internet.  Sometimes, the Internet goes, but I can still make calls and texts.  Other times, everything is gone and I get "No Signal" where it normally says Vodafone UK.

So when trying to fix this problem after it's noticed, I try putting it into Airplane mode and back out.  The phone scans for a network and goes back to the same state as before I tried this fix. I have tried resetting network settings, but this doesn't change anything. The only thing that actually fixes it temporarily is turning the phone right off and back on again.

At this stage I assume this is a bug with the software, but I wondered if anyone else is experiencing anything like this? If no one is, I will take it up with Apple, but I don't really want to do that as I love the new phone so much!!

Cheers, Stuart

It looks like that I everything is fine now for me , no drops no sim failure, here is what I did (dont know what accualy helped so I will write everything)

First I installed ios 5.1 beta 3 but issue was still there so I changed this settiing:

    1. I enabled my sim pin

    2. enabled siri raise to speak

    3. in settings - General - Date and time I changed from set automatically to manual.

    4. changed day and time

    5. I rebooted my iphone and changed date and time back to automatic

Since then I have no issues with my phone. Only somethimes warning pops up that I lost signal with my operator but after second its gone and all is working.

Dont know if it will help you but It surely helped me. I am now without issues for 3 days

It's a software problem, not a hardware problem, if not there would be no reports that the phone worked just fine with ios 5.0.

The new buid (9A406) did not solved the problem (ios 5.0.1), at least not for me, it's exactly the same after the restore.

When "no service" apears "all" I have to do is to make a call from my iphone... It's almost like a wake up for the phone, and after a few seconds the signal is back!! It does not last for long... But it's ok for a few minutes.

It's seems to me like the phone switches off the antenna every now and then and when I try to make a call from my phone it switches it's antenna back...

Let's hope apple fixes this software bugs on ios 5.1... I haven't tried beta 3, but most of the reports here are promising....

When I saw your post and solution I had to start to laugh, no offence but this is not witchcrafting or robot movie and when u done few pointless steps it goes away.

    @ bialowas

excatly the same problem Im experiencing, the only difference that I have signal longer than you but it's random

    @ all

This is a serious software problem but no problem for apple because as I can see here that there are a bunch of pepole complaining but we are a few number for all the other pepole who are satisfated.

    @ ninja

I really think its a hardware problem as i have seen same IOS on other devices.

Also I am in UAE, i pre ordered it from UK. White 1. and i m having trouble with it.

I have signals and everything but my prob is when i m in call sometimes it drops the call and goes in searching mode and then again the signals comes up, this is also happening with in standby mode..

    I tried IOS 5.1 B3

It went very good for 3 to 4 days then again it started

Also after purchasing my 4S i ordered another Black iphone which is working fine(as per my friend).

Thinking of getting it replaced now, and try getting a black 1.

We all know the history of white Iphone 4. so may be its because of that..

I have faced with the same issue. iPhone 4S is dropping network. After some time it shows the error "SIM card is unavailable". It is happening right after iOS upgrade to 5.01. Does anyone experience the same? How can I solve the issue?

Dude there's 54 page of debate and u're asking how can you solve the issue. OMg

There's no solution obviously, hopefuly the update which is coming on 22 as I could understand will solve the issue, but Im not that optimistic anymore, will see...
