Q: My iTunes does not recognize disc burner.  I read through answers on the web page and followed the instructions for removing the GEAR drivers and then reinstalled iTunes.  It still says there is no disc burner or software installed.  Can anyone help?

    Is that true? Or does your Windows user account have full administrative rights?

     

    If you've got full admin rights, then we'll check to see if you've got an odd sort of permissions problem that can manifest as a burning issue.

     

    By way of experiment, we'll launch iTunes by doing a run as administrator. Quit iTunes first.

     

    In Computer, open Local Disk C: or whichever drive you have your program files installed on.

    Open the "Program files (x86)" folder.

    Open the "iTunes" folder.

    Right-click on the iTunes.exe file and select "run as administrator".

     

    Run your diagnostics again. Do they now say "current user is an administrator"?

     

    If so, try another burn. Does it go through without the error message this time?

    I do have full administrative rights on the system so I'm not sure why iTunes didn't recognize me as an administrator (??).  I did do the "run as admnistrator" and verified through diagnostics that I was showing as an administrator.  Unfortunately, I'm still receiving the "disc burner software not found" error when I try to actually burn a disc.  This is maddening!!  Everything worked fine when I was importing my CDs (including restoring from a backup I had previously burned) but now it won't let me actually burn a disc.  Oh, did I mention I got a new computer?  Not sure that would have anything to do with it, but ... Also, we thought maybe it was just that my discs weren't properly formatted so my boyfriend brought over blank discs that he uses every day without any formatting issues and it still wouldn't read those either.  Any additional thoughts or ideas are appreciated!!

    Ok ... tried this one, too, without success.  I'm still getting a message that no supported disc burners are found (see below) and when I ask it turn "burn", I still get the message "disc burner software not found".  Any other tricks to try?

    Doublechecking something ... although the iTunes diagnostics don't say so, some of the information I'm seeing on line suggests that the SOHD-16P9S is a DVD-ROM (it's not actually a burner ...). Can't find the relevant Lite-on pages though, so I can't be sure.

    Well ... I actually have 3 removeable storage drives on my system:  floppy disk, DVD and CD.  I know the CD drive is a burner because we pulled it out of my previous system and added it to this system.  Previously, when I opened my "computer" link, it showed all three drives.  Now it only shows the floppy drive.  Having gone through all these various steps to remove drivers and reinstall, have I managed to completely remove these drives??  I know they are connected and have power but the system doesn't seem to be reading them anymore.  At this point, I'm officially out of my element!  Any thoughts on how to "reinstall" these drives when it doesn't even recognize them?  Or is that even an issue that I can resolve?

    Been through this one as well and reinstalled the GEAR drivers.  Still no success.

    Oh, okay ... so the CD burner isn't even showing in the first set of diagnostics.

     

    Could you post a fresh set of diagnostics please? (That may cast some light on the recent disappearance of the drives.)

    Couple of things I spotted right off ... diagnostics still don't show me as an administrator but I told it run as administrator.  When it asked to insert a prerecorded CD and then choose which drive to use, I have no drives in the menu to choose from but yesterday I had 2 and shows no external plug-ins installed.  Hmmm.  Fresh diagnostics below ...

    ... results consistent with a hardware failure, but that should be rare. I've seen a few too many of these sorts of results in the past couple of weeks. I think something new is afoot.

     

    Can you try something for me? Switch the PC off and leave it off for a couple of hours. After switching it back on, do you get the drives back?

    I am running Windows 8 and iTunes 12.1 and I ran into this dreaded problem.

     

    No one has posted running iTunes as Administrator and that fixed my issue.  I'm not sure what Apple changed with iTunes over the past 2 versions but this was never an issue in the past.

     

    this was not a 3rd party driver, this was 100% an iTunes issue because running as Administrator is apparently required to burn cds
