When I insert a game CD my iMAC ejects it. Inserting DVDs works (plays movie). Inserting a music CD also has the same result (ejected).

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

First make sure the games are for OS X and not for MS Windows. As for your CD's  if you use the drive a lot it may simply need cleaning. Go to your local office supply store and tell them you need a CD/DVD cleaning kit and they will be happy to help you.

The game should say what version of the OS it works with. My guess is this is a VERY old game if it doesn't say at least OS X and what version of OS X. You should Google the game to see if it's compliant with 10.6.8. You should Google the manufacturer, game name and the words "specifications."

If the machine is older than 4 years old, you may need to bring it in for service to have the PRAM battery replaced.

This can cause the optical drive to reject discs too.

The other thing that can reject disks is an optical disk already in the drive that is not showing up in normal places because of preferences, or its lack of readability.  If you suspect that, see this tip:

10.7.1 iMac 5,1 MacBook Pro 3,1, Mac OS X (10.7.1), - * Links to my pages may give me compensation.

For music CD's you may try to change the import setings of Cd's in iTunes. In iTunes, click Preferences then General then import settings. You will have an option of: AAC Encoder, AIFF Encoder and three others to try.

    Good Luck

CDs are read by different lasers than DVDs.  If it is strictly CDs that are failing, it sounds like either the CD laser head is dirty or damaged.   Get a CD cleaner if the machine is out of warranty, or if it is under warranty bring it in to have it cleaned and the head and motor of the drive examined.
