    Hi @sbailey4

I did not restore from backup as I have nothing on my phone (this was true for my iPhone 4s as well). No apps, no email, just some music and video. Cloud is off too. Wifi was turned off overnight too.

Will try without the music and videos next time.

    @AliARwill try that again.

@enx2you are right. when I do Erase all and setup as fresh device, its ok for a day or two and then starts draining.

Doesn't that make you a bit curious about why it can work for a few days, then the problem returns?  Like did you do something like connect to iTunes, or download an App, or use an App you hadn't used before?

On your 1st charge, do you charge with the phone on the home screen, or with the phone completely turned off?

You can charge with the phone on, and in use, or with it in 'sleep mode', or you can do the power off.  It will charge fastest if it is powered off, of course.

No need to take it personally.   We have 600+ pages here to weed through and the more realistic info we have, the better.

    Good question. Nothing changed.

I did a "Erase All Content and Settings". Set up the phone as new. No iCloud, Nothing in notifications (removed

the default weather and stock app even), no location based services, disabled diagnostics and sync over wifi.

Cellular data, 3G and wifi are off.

The phone had/has no apps, no music, videos or podcasts. not even the addressbook.

This is a 3GS that worked fine before, even worked with fine iOS 5.0.1 for a month and recently started having

the problem of usage time being the same as standby time.

I just did a Erase All content and Settings again and will wait till it dies and recharge using the wall charger and see how it goes.

Truly the iPhone 4s is not "empty and useless" out of the box. If you can talk, check email, manage your calendar, send text message, take pictures, edit pictures, watch youtube videos, netflix movies, check weather forecasts, check times around the world, set reminders ,listen to music, browse the internet, purchase music, manage your contacts, watch videos, take notes, check maps, get directions, set alarms, set timers, and ask Siri most anything you want to know about. well.... If you consider that "useless" then you are correct. However I would be interested in knowing what you need OTHER than these functions on a telephone? Now I do have a few cool apps, like remote for itunes slick app btw, dont get me wrong but come on, "useless"? A tad bit over stated dont you think? ITS A TELEPHONE.

    Bud,

Your posts come across like you have solved all your problems, but you have an empty, virtually useless phone!   Please get it configured as you intend to use it (APPS, email, etc.) THEN let us know how battery life is.    I could care less that an empty unconfigured phone lasts 3+ days.

So a downtown office with 57 employees (my client) is moving away from blackberries to iphone 4s devices. We are moving them in batches of 10. First 10 phones were ordered before Christmas. 4 of them went back. Phones would have 11% of battery life at 10am and were hot( After charging them all night) Second batch of 10 came in after 1st of January, and two phones are experiencing same issue. So we are averaging 30% or so bad iPhone 4s devices. All of them are 16 gig, black. We just ordered another batch of 10. These are all Verizon phones. We will see how it goes. We all have them setup same way with same apps, same exchange server etc.

If anyone thinks this is not a hardware issue, I am not sure what to tell you. 5.1 or whatever will NOT fix it. Exchange your phone!

Oh for crying out loud.....   AliAR has stated several times that he/she had configured nothing, no email, no calendars, downloaded no music, photos etc., etc., etc....   The phone was sitting there in the condition it would have come out of the box from APPLE.   My point is, using that situation to make claims that you have solved the battery drain problem and are thrilled to death with the results, is nothing more than a waste of everyone's time here!   I stand by my post that unreaslitic situations provide no value to this discussion.   How could you possibly disagree??????

You prob be fine. Of course the majority of folks here are having issues (why they are in a support forum). and 500 + of these pages here are talking about how Apple is bad and needs to fix etc. from the same users over and over. Another 100 are repititive "fixes" for new comers. Anyway follow some of the advice posted as far as turnoff items you dont need etc and go from there. Hope it works for you. BTW I dont personally know anyone who has ANY issues with their 4s with battery or static or anything else. They all love their 4s's  Only what I read here would I even know there was an issue.  A bit of advice? Move to this forum https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3484755  or https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526981   and away from this one. Its become rather usless as far as getting support and help and assistance.

Please Read this entire post for my fix

FIRST OF ALL I MUST SAY THAT THE BATTERY THE 4S IS A BEAST!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to add two steps to this.  I am a pure believer davidch you are unto something.  I did all your steps and i went from 100% to 81% in two and a half hours...I was saying to myself "this mess don't work!" lol....BUT I decided to do a little investigating on my own.

I looked at my usage meter and realized that the actual USAGE TIME and STANDBY TIME were only 13 mins apart.  However i knew for a fact the phone was sitting on the couch WITH THE SCREEN TURNED OFF next to me for 2 and a half hours.  I may have picked it up once or twice after receiving a text and perhaps sending a text or two but that's it! My approximate REAL usage was around 5-10 mins.

Even tho I looked up in the top right corner and did not see the gps symbol, I was still curious.  So i pulled up my multitasking menu (double tap home button) and noticed that after the reset there were multiple apps still available to be selected from.  Not a surprise because we did a settings reset and not a complete content reset.  My whole idea was to selectively remove app by app from the list until i found the culprit that was running in the background causing this fiasco (our fiasco).

IT WORKED!! I narrowed it down to the camera app. Which happened to be the last one that I eliminated.  Then i started seeing the difference between my usage and standby meter grow larger and better even tho i was checking frequenly (about every 15 mins).  I CLOSED THE CAMERA APP AT 12:30PM TODAY.  At this time my battery has dropped down to 77%.   AT 2:00 MY BATTERY LEVEL IS AT 76% What an improvement!!!!!!!!  But was the camera app the problem??? NO NO NO NO NO

My guess is after the settings wipe all apps that were running ended up in a crash loop.  Because after that i opened up all the apps that were running previously plus some extras and as of 2:41PM THE IPHONE IS STILL AT 76%.  With approx. 3hrs of usage and over 5hrs of standby now.  With about 20 apps running including the camera app!

I also did turn off siri raise to speak and did a reboot. Because after turning off RTS the infrared sensor on the front stays enabled until a reboot is executed.  So here are my steps mixed with davidch's that worked for me.

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

    6. Go to General->Siri....turn raise to speak off

    7. Hold power and home together for a few seconds until the apple logo shows up. (Reboot)

    8. Double tap home button exit all apps running and you should be good to do...

i didnt reboot after step 8 but maybe you should if you have a sprint or verizon iphone.  2:55 AND I AM STILL AT 76%  I think i am in love all over again!!!!

Excellent news! Also to add. For Verizon customers (maybe others) after a reset you may need to dial *228 and option 1. Then close the phone and message apps (double tap home and hold down then x). Leave it for a few minutes. That will solve an issue where your contacts are showing up strange or number in a text message not a name etc. Or even a US formatted number appears as (33) 1233-4444 in your contact list. Seems to appear after a reset sometimes.

i still get 4-5 days out my iphone with 5-6 hrs usage

this is easy turn off icloud and location services & siri

    unless you need it

    icloud is a backup

so update it at the same time you cycle the battery  once a month

as i have said previously there is really only three units that can take enough current from the cell as to drain it fast

TX Rf module and drivers  lcd unit and driver and mpus

i feel there is a problem with icloud wanting too much updates

if you leave it on down goes the cell

    my only gripe for sure

and its a pleasure to use this phone

far far the best one on the market

Hi everyone, I do not know if this has been posted before, but I found something that dramatically boosted my battery life.

A little back story: my phone would only last about 8-12 hours under moderate usage. I would lose around 30% overnight if I wasn't plugged in. I would also put my phone on airplane mode from 7:30am-11:30am, and again at 1pm-4pm. I would have to charge 2-3 times a day, each time running down below 10%. I didn't notice any phantom usage though, maybe a little. My usage time seemed about right though. My screen brightness is also almost completely down.

Anyway, on to the fix: All I did was reset my network settings.

    Setting/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings

I unplugged last night around 9:30. I checked this morning to see I was at 93%, and I had used it in the middle of the night to check texts a couple of times. I did not put my phone on airplane mode today at work, and I didn't use it until around 11:40. I was still at 87%! I then used it to text over the next hour, and I streamed a podcast for about 20 mins. Went back to work, leaving airplane mode off. When I got off, I was around the mid 60's%. I streamed podcasts for another 1&1/2 hours and texted during that time. You can see my usage stats in the picture below: BTW - I was also sending pictures.

    photo.PNG

As you can see, alot of my usage time was spent streaming audio (all but about 30 minutes was on 3g).

I don't know if this will help everyone, but I hope it helps someone. I'm sure if I wasn't streaming the audio, I would still be around 60%! I will give an update with my normal moderate usage (ie. text, light calling, picture message, check email, light amount of games, and airplane mode.)
