Print Queue Hangs

My print queue will not clear a job after it's finished being printed. This prevents the next job in the queue from being printed. I need to manually deleted the completed job to enable the next one to begin printing, which necessitates staying with the computer to monitor the process. Additionally, the queue will not hold more than about 6 jobs at once. Albeit, this is graphical work being printed on 12 x18 sheets (but should this really be a problem?). Other than this, it prints beautifully.

 

Epson 1520, with Gutenprint-5.2.8, + usbtb-1.0.17 driver, parallel to USB cable.

    Are you setting the 12 x 18 sheets as a custom paper size or are you using one of the Tabloid Oversize paper sizes listed under the Page Size menu in the print window?

     

    The symptom sounds like the printing system is not getting the signal from the printer that the job has finished.

    Afteer checking, the page sizes listed in the driver under 10.4.x are 12 x 18 with sub choices of 12 x 18 and ArchB.

    Do the jobs that hang seem to be application specific?  That is, do Safari or Firefox print jobs hang most of the time but jobs from Preview never hang?

     

    Please also try setting up another printer but use the standard USB connection rather than USBTB and see if that makes a difference.  Usually USBTB is much better at handling parallel-to-USB adapters but there are times that the USB communications software tht Apple provides works better.  In fact, now that I look back at your original post and see that you are using a G5 comuter, the USBTB software there is a better chance that it is the problem.  I seem to recall that the developer had some problems with 64 bit PPC machines working correctly.

     

    While we are at it, let's run down the list of the other standard questions -- Has a prior version of the Gutenprint drivers worked properly on your machine before.  If you have or had another computer other than a G5, does the software combination work on the other computer?  Do you have another parallel-to-USB adapter that you could try?

    Thanks for the detailed response.  I fully understand why you want to keep your older printer running as long as possible.  I am still using my old HP Deskjet 870 that I used with System 7.1.

     

    Judging by your timeline as to when you started using Gutenprint/Gimp-Print and usbtb, it might be worthwhile trying an older version of usbtb.  You might want to try version 1.0.10.  That fixed a very similar issue to yours that I had reported to the developer.  (I started beta testing usbtb before the first release.)  YOu can find the older releases at https://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/usbtb%20-%20Mac%20OS%20X%20ONL Y%20usb/

     

    As I remembered about the jobs that used to hang at the end when I was testing usbtb, I recall that I was able to resolve the issue by highlighting the job that had just finished in the printer proxy window and then clicking on the Delete button.  That is not an ideal situation, but it may be a work around for you.

     

    As for posting to the Gutenprint forums, I would suggest that we keep the discussion here for now.  I am the one that would be replying on the Gutenprint forums anyway.  There may come a point where I would need to see a more detailed error log from the printing system.  If that is the case, then we can work the issue as a Support Request at Gutenprint.

     

    By the way, what brand of parallel-to-USB adapter are you using?   Epson printers are generally very tolerant of these devices, but there are some combinations that are always trouble.

    RE: downgrading to an earlier version of usbtb. 

    The best way to do this is to first run the unintaller for usbtb.  Then restart your computer and install the lower version of usbtb.  For any upgrades, you need only run the installer, but downgrades require some extra steps to ensure the lesser version is properly recognized.

     

    Re:  trying a different parallel-to-USB adapter.

    If a prior version of usbtb does not resolve your issue, then I think it would be worht your time and effort to try a different adapter.  My recommendation is to get a new one from a local store where you can return it for a full refund if it doesn't fix the issue.

     

    As much as all siuch adapters are alike, there are subtle differences between many or most of them.  I have both an Epson adapter and a Belkin adapter.  My HP DeskJet 870 will report the model number to the system differently depending on which cable is being used.  I cann't remember the actual differences right now, but it was something like one cable would show the make and model as "HP DeskJet 870" and the other cable would show the printer as "HEWLETT PACKARD DeskJet 870".
