Q: WebCam is not recognized on G3 iBook

This question applies to a webcam used on a telescope but details can be applied to any webcam.  I have a G3 iBook using OSX 10.3.9 and Quicktime 7.1.3 which is within specs for this StarShoot Solar System Color Imaging Camera.  The camera driver and Webcam monitor capture software install package (Sonix SN9C201) installed successfully and a webcam monitor icon appears on the desktop.  However when connecting the camera to the computer thru a USB port and then clicking on that icon nothing happens (a list of cameras should appear).  Something is missing in that installation process.  Interesting though this same installation software loads and the camera is recognized when I try it on my desktop Mac Mini (Intel).  The specs call for a USB 2.0 port.  I don't think that is what is on the iBook.  Would this make a difference?  Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks. A G3 iBook has USB 1.1 port(s).

    Would this make a difference?

I believe that is the problem, yes. Many peripherals are backward-compatible with USB 1.1, but some are not.

Thank you for your response Rhonda Wilson.  I guess my follow-up question would be how to make it compatible, USB 1.1 to 2.0?  Is there a device of some sort that makes this conversion?  Thanks in advance for a reply.  CAB

No, there is no conversion device and no way to upgrade the USB 1.1 ports. The answer is to upgrade to an iBook G4 (or, better yet, a MacBook) to get the USB 2.0 ports if you want to use this particular camera.
