If you're like me, you tried installing it early on after the annoucement when Apple's servers were getting hit pretty hard. The App Store seems stuck because the app already started downloading but hasn't finished installing. Apple should do something about this, since not everyone knows to check in the right place. The icon won't appear in your Applications folder until the installation is complete. It also won't come up in a Spotlight search.
Here's the fix. Open LaunchPad and look for the iBooks Author icon on one of the screens. If it appears greyed out with a "paused" title, click it to resume downloading. Give it several minutes to download but once complete it should work fine.
Hope this helps.

thanks for this! I have also been stuck in limbo for the last few days. If Apple made this little trick more user friendly we would not what is and what is not happening!
Found my paused download in Launchpad. Thanks again.

Yeah, they need to at least add some sort of messaging in the App Store to let the user know the app is pending download. Ideally, it would also let you know if the download is paused and take you automatically to the appropriate LauchPad screen.
I think the oversight is due to the fact that app downloads are usually fairly quick and don't require further user interaction.

>Now, what if the icon is grayed out and showing "Waiting"?
I see that if the network is down. Check it an if all is well that's under your immediate control, then the issue might be on the backend and all you can do is be patient/check later, etc.

I have the exact problem that Michael mentioned but when I go to Launch Pad the greyed out icon for ibooks author is not there. I am sure what you thought happened in Michael's case was exactly what happened to me. I saw ibooks start to install, then my computer hung and after trying everything I restarted. Now I cant see the icon in Launch Pad but the app store will not allow me to download ibook author it just spins for a few seconds and thats it. Any suggestions for what to do?
Thanks so much.
