I had the same problem, it takes up 0.9gb

Archiving emails helped free up some space, not much though.

From what I can tell, the "other" classification of allocated memory seems to be associated with the activity of the ipad and active working storage of active applications.

The first question I envisage is that, I just cold booted my iPad, why is there already space allocated to "other" even though I have not used any of the apps?  My answer to that is that depending on the number ofapp that you allow notifications from and provide location services to would determine how many applications actually have a need for active memory to recieve and male the updates.

    Cheers,

The "other" category does not represent active memory.

After a little more research, I managed to find a support article indicating that it could be orphaned files (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1503 and refer to Solution 1).

However, this does not explain the large amount of "other" data after a cold boot.

My iPad was showing overage on total memory on a Sync until I did a reboot. Whatever "other" is, the iOS was counting as part of my total memory.  Over 4Gb became available.

Hi Mike, this is very much the type of activity I was referring to above.  I see similar behaviour between IOS5 and OSX in that all file write operations have an impact on memory.  Under OSX you can reset the free memory utilisation with the "purge" command which is issued from the shell prompt, but this is not an option on the iPad so a restart is necessary to release the inactive memory.

If this is the case then "Other" memory is nothing to worry about at all and will be released as and when it is necessary (managed by IOS).  Another thing I am trying to guage is how much of my personal data is that "Other" memory usage if any at all (what I mean by that is my dowloaded email, files, etc.)

I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but I had 6.6GB as "other."  I used iTunes to delete some old apps still listed there, but I had already deleted off my iPad.  I then sync'd it and now "other" is down to .66GB.

I tried solutions that didn't work for me like:

    - checking and unchecking "Open iTunes    when this iPhone is connected" in order to recalculate the "Other" storage capacity.

    - restored the whole phone and removing all my pictures and apps, but after a week my "Other" turned into 9 gigs after constant syncing to remove my videos.

Well, I finally cleared out the "Other" space the other day. It turns out that I've been sending a lot of videos and pictures with the Messages app. When I cleared the messages on the people whom I've sent a lot of vids and pics, then voila! The 9 gigs of "Other" space is gone.

For me, the Messages app wasn't clearing it's cache often enough if ever.

Hope this works for someone else, too.

Close all your apps (all running in background) and sync. Done! No need to delete cache, unused apps or content. Looks like this "other" content is some kind of page file (you know, lots of open apps, run out of RAM, keep using your ipad, keep downloading content, streaming, etc).

    Hope it helps!

I have a 32gb iPad and have 7.1 gigabytes of other junk! I want to get rid of this crap!

Fro my particular problem, this is definitely related to Videos.  Whenever I delete a Video, my "other" grows by the exact amount of space, equal to that of the video I deleted.  Really annoying.

I have an Iphone 4s 32 GB. I have 10.3GB being used by "other" as well.

I have unfortunately followed, at the advise of others, unchecked different syncing options, reset the phone in every way it can be, turned of the phone 1,000 times etc.. I have lost recorded lectures I can not get back and the amount of time I've lost is beyond ridiculous. I have learned from the experience that some things are not worth it. There are to many discussion boards offering advise that are not expert advice, they are best guesses and opinion; this is not to put down discussion boards. They are useful for so many thing, but like I said, some things are not worth the risk.  My point being, I feel your pain.

My best advice, one I intend to follow myself this Saturday, is make an appointment with the genius bar and let them fix it. Don't risk loosing valuable media, time or sleep.

    Good Luck.

i don't have my mail linked to my iPad so I know it's not that. I have a 64GB & 28.8GB is taken up with other. I did notice when I upgraged my software to version 5 it jumped a lot. Deleting Safari cashe & history helped a little bit but not much. REALLY annoying coz I got the 64GB for the storage and half of it is taken up with this stupid OTHER.

Would be great if Apple could do something about this issue which is obviously frustrating EVERYONE!!!

My only option now is to wipe it clean and start from scratch!

I bought PhoneView from http://www.ecamm.com/.  I looked in var/mobile/Media/ApplicationArchives/.  I found that the iPad had incomplete copies of apps that were not transfered correctly archived here in zip format.  I deleted these files and now my iPad has less than 1Gb of Other.

I have restored my 16GB phone twice, once from iTunes and once from iCloud. I can't get the 8.9 GB of other to go away.
