I've been in contact with Apple Australia customer relations, a few times, and they refuse to cover anything as my ax is out of warranty ( by less than 2 months). They seem to be getting biligerent with me. It's like they think I'm trying to take advantage of them, when in fact all I want is some fairness. I referred them to this thread and they replied they don't place any weight on discussions. I'm not giving up yet though. Next step is sending a letter to The Manager of customer relations stating my concerns and if I cannot get a satisfactory resolution, then I will be lodging a complaint with our Office of Fair Trading ( a Govt. Dept concerned with consumer protection.)
Regardless of Apples warranty ( 12mths), legally ( in Australia at least), there is an implied Statutory Warranty which insists that goods must be fit for purpose. I'm claiming a $200AUD Airport Express that fails after 13 1/2 months is not fit for purpose.
To help me get some statistics, could anyone who reads this discussion and has experienced this problem, leave a reply to the discussion stating this. I'm thinking there are a lot more cases of this happening then what Apple would have us believe.

This is crazy. Apple should issue a recall or something. Mine is dead, too. Someone at the Apple store had better make this right.

Wow. This is disappointing. My AX just died, too. Mine's a little older, though - it's around 2 years. I guess I'll have to find something else for wireless.

Same happended to my AirPort Express.
Worked like a charm, and all of a sudden the APX didn't respond. No light is showing.
Oh - and yes, the guarantee period is over!

Can't we just make some kind of official mailing list where everyone having that problem signs in.
Whouldn't that make our voice louder and force Apple to react with an exchange programm or something like that.
I would have started such a mailing list but sipmly don't have the means to do so.
If there's allready such a list please post the URL here so myself and everyone who's frustrated with that situation can participate.

If anyone has a better idea let us know.

my airportx is dead, and beyond the 1 yr warranty. i called applecare, and they said applecare will offer tech support, but not warranty extension etc etc.

    no dice.

And add yet another dead AirPort Express to the list. No lights flashing whatsoever and a faint smell of burned wire. Mine was bought in Aug 2004 and used continuously plugged into a 110v US outlet. No luck getting it repaired or replaced by Apple...

Has anyone attempted a DIY repair?

    same for me...
    17 months after purchase
    AX was plugged in 24/24 & 7/7
French Apple support say that they are aware, but can not do anything before Apple annouces something worlwide.
    Hope it comes soon!
    cheers,

And here is the third "Happy Valentine - your offline - get out the ethernet-cable and find out why the AX is not working"-Surprise today.

Worked 24/24 7/7 since Xmas 04, that is less than 14 months.

...and yes, it smells slighty gross. Both the Airport Express and the Company that sold it.

Add me to the list, 13 months old AX. I've already posted in another thread about the same thing, but wanted to contribute to this one also.

    We're all just waiting for:

    a) Our dead Base Stations to be re-born from their ashes
    b) Someone, somewhere in the U.S., to set up a nice web page collecting names so that we can all, uhm, go to a nice picnic together

I'm personally opting for b). The French MacBidouille website has been dutifully collecting this info, but I don't know if they will take any action and whether it will affect people outside the EC.
