I never used AppleWorks however I know Pages & Numbers will import their word processing and spreadsheet info. If you used the AppleWorks data base FileMaker Pro will import them and then you can either use FMP or Bento to use them:
Convert Appleworks to Pages as a Batch, or must I do them
One at a Time?
By now I understand that in Lion, I will be using my Appleworks 6.2.9 files in Pages.
Will someone please tell me which of these is the method for preparing for that
day: (1) Simply open one Appleworks file, and do a "Get Info". Tell it to open in Pages.
Also tell it to open ALL files of that type in Pages. Done! (2) Not so fast, Louie.
Every single Appleworks file must be individually be opened, and told, using Get Info,
to open in Pages in the future (or saved as a Pages file).
Is it (1) or (2)? Thank you.
Just drag WP file onto the Pages icon in the Dock, or a SS file onto the Numbers icon. Likewise presentation files onto the Keynote icon.
Or you can right-click on the file and use the "open with" dialogue to choose the relevant application and use the "change all" function to save dragging each one. When you save the document it should save as a Pages document (or Numbers etc) leaving the original AW file in place.
Databases are less easy.
You can export AW DB files as ASCII text files which can then be imported into Numbers. Not ideal, but OK for simple lists.
You can then export them as .csv files which can be imported to most third-party database applications.
For drawing and paint files, Intaglio looks OK, but pricey. You may find others with a bit of searching, but that's the only current app I found that claims to open AW draw and paint files (as distinct from MacPaint and MacDraw).
Hi - I can't answer about what will happen in Lion; I don't use it. However they should do so.
Pages' 08? In SL I think that should work. What version of AW are your files? They need to be 6.2.9 to be certain of opening.
I need independendent confirmation of this, but I suspect that for Lion you may need iWork '09 (Or just Pages if you don't use the others). You can get that from the app store in SL 10.6.6 to .8 and Lion.
If they're failing to open with the "open with" dialogue, try the drag and drop method.

Thanks. I use Appleworks 6.2.9 in Snow Leopard. Pages 08 won't open these by either method.
So perhaps Pages 09 is needed to open them in Snow Leopard, so that I can convert them all (as a batch)
prior to changing over to Lion. Then they will arrive safely in Lion, as I understand things. You
raise a good point...I might need Pages 09 not only to convert them in Snow Leopard...I might
also need Pages 09 in order to be able to open them in Lion.
Interesting that a Level5 person like you is not using Lion. I guess this vindicates my doubts about Lion.
The only reason I plan to convert to Lion: I wish to retain my Mac.com email address. The only way
I can do so is to go to the AppleCloud, and the only way to go AppleCloud is Lion.
Thanks again for your help.
I only have iWork '09 to test with now, and I know that works as I've converted most of my SS files to Numbers, and a good few WP files to Pages in order to work them up to more proffessional looking documents.
I won't be leaving AW soon though as the database alternatives are either not up to scratch or too expensive (and I have many DB files).
As for the SL/Lion debate; just cast around the forums for the number of threads requesting help to get back to SL.
If retaining your .Mac address is the only consideration, I'd also search the forums for threads on using iCloud with SL. It does appear that access is possible, but not with all the bells and whistles.
