Are you running Lion and using iCloud on the Mac? You have to be using iCloud on the Mac in order for the documents to sync with iCloud. Are you using an iCloud ready application on the Mac such as Pages?

Documents/apps on the Mac do not (yet) sync with/via iCloud.

iWork apps are not yet enabled for iCloud.

Then my apologies to the OP.

I sync my Pages docs on the iPad with iCloud and I knew that the requirements for the iCloud on the Mac were that the Mac had to be running Lion so I assumed (obviously incorrectly) - that if running Lion on the Mac that the docs would sync with iCloud.

I stand corrected. Thanks for the correction.

Chris .... The files can be uploaded from the Mac to iCloud.com?

Hi Demo, I have Lion installed on my Imac and running icloud, since al items seems to sync with my ipad thru itunes...like music/photos. But with my documents it does not sync. I have pages installed on Imac but when I open the icloud page on imac and click on iworks...it would read"get pages ios" by the way I dont have pages installed on my ipad altough I purchased one for imac.

Well apparently I gave you some incorrect information. IWorks apps on the Mac are not syncing with iCloud at this time. You are getting that message "get Pages for iOS" because currently Pages on the iPad will sync with iCloud. I have Pages on my iPad and my documents do sync from my iPad to iCloud.

You would need to purchase Pages for the iPad in order to edit and save those files from the Mac anyway. There are other ways to get files from the Mac to the iPad. IOS file sharing is one way - and emailing is another way. File sharing works when you sync with iTunes. But if you do not have an app on the iPad that you can edit and save the files into, it doesn't matter anyway.

You can read this for more information about file sharing.

Post back with more questions - many other knowledgeable users can contribute as well.

That is the goal but they are not there yet.

Yes you can copy to/from www.icloud.com on your Mac.

HI Demo you seem like the person to know for help.  My family are newbbies to the apple world.  I just bought my daughter an imac and ipad for college she is learning to use it now.  We were told that she could take the ipad to class type notes edit document in (PAGES) and is would sync automatically with her imac.  We have bought pages fro both her imac and ipad. I'm concerned that she is not going to learn how to use it before we can take it back and just get and ibook pro.  I just have the idea of her walking around campus with a 1,500 computer on her back.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Okay, here's what I understand about the iCloud:

Begin with the iOS5 world. This is "sandboxed". That means that each application is isolated in its own separate file system with a couple of special conduits through which very limited stuff can be passed. It's different from your Mac.

On your Mac, one file system holds all your files, so a Numbers file sits right next to a Pages file and a Keynote File, a .PDF file and likely other formats as well. You double-click on a Pages file and it opens up Pages. Double-click on a Numbers file and it opens Numbers.

The files are not protected from each other, which was not a problem when the computer was invented, but it's starting to be a problem, and the solution is to sandbox everything so that Pages only sees pages files, and Numbers only sees Numbers files. Your Mail program has a special conduit that can pass Pages files to the Pages file system or Numbers files to the Numbers file system.

If you go to http://www.icloud.com you will see that kind of sandboxed environement. There's your iCloud email, your Contacts, your Calendar and iWorks. If you select iWorks, you get to choose Pages, Numbers or Keynote. There is no general file system where all these things blend together.

So, on your Mac, you don't double-click on an email file to open it. You open Mail and all your email is there.

You don't double-click on an Address Book file to open it. You open Address Book and all your addresses are there.

You don't double-click on a calendar file to open it. You open iCal and all your appointments are there.

These are basically sandboxed environments on your Mac, just like they are on the iPad. So, these things all synchronize via iCloud. But Pages and Numbers and Keynote don't synchronize.

You can pass files back and forth between these two worlds -- the sandboxed and the general-file-system worlds. You do it by dragging and dropping files from your Mac to your iCloud Web site and it is automatically sent to your iPad. Or you can secondary-click on an iPad document on the iCloud Web site and download a copy of that iPad file back to your Mac.

Besides the issues of passing between a sandboxed world and a general-file-system world, these documents also have to go through a file translation process because Pages on an iPad is not identical to Pages on a Mac. Give the iPad a break. It's not a full-powered computer. That's why it costs less than a full-powered computer and weighs less than a full-powered computer. It simply isn't one.

It is impressive how much it CAN do, but it cannot, at this time, handle all of the formatting features that Pages on a Mac has. So, you can view and edit the content of Mac Pages files on iPad Pages and you can create new files, but there are options to do things on the Mac version that you don't have on the iPad version. Until they both use exactly the same kind of file with exactly the same options, you are not going to be able to synchronize files between the Mac and the iPad.

iCal and the iPad's Calendar share the same format, and they synch. Address Book and the iPad's Contacts share the same format. So, they synch.

So, the iPad is great for class notes (especially with a Bluetooth keyboard) or for doing research in the library or other highly mobile things, but when she's writing that fat term paper with footnotes and indented quotes and other fancy formatting, she'll want to do that on the Mac, not the iPad.

    This is currently incorrect.

Apple is working on getting iWork documents to sync through iCloud to/from computer but it is not yet possible.

    -> DropBox will do it

I don't know if I need to explain now that Sarris2 has posted, but for the very short version of how iCloud works with the iPad and the Mac - using on of Apple's iWorks apps ...

If you install Pages on the iPad, and if your daughter sets up an iCloud account, the notes that she takes in Pages will sync to her iCloud account. When she gets back to her dorm room and wants to work on the Mac (with Pages installed on it) she can log into her iCloud account with the Safari web browser on the Mac - and then download the notes to her desktop - she can edit rhe document on the Mac - and then drag the edited document into the browser window - and the edited document will upload to the cloud. When she uses Pages again on the iPad - that document that she was working in on the Mac - will be in Pages with all of her edits in place.

Stated in one sentence, the documents will sync to the cloud from the iPad - but she has to retrieve them from the cloud using a web browser on the Mac.
