Sorry, you can't do what you're asking. Neither have any way of taking a video in signal.

I believe that some recent 27" iMacs may be able to do so, but nothing else as yet.

You'll need a seperate monitor. The iMac will only Mirror on another monitor unless it's newer than your description suggests; the MBA will probably be able to use extended desktop, but you'll still need a stand-alone monitor (or TV).

That connects to the mini-DVI port with apropriate adapter cables for the device used.

While an "extended" desktop may not be practical, you can set up a remote desktop, VNC, or screen sharing connection to see the content of one on the other.  If you told us your model identifier in Apple menu -> About This Mac -> System information or More info, we can tell you what each Mac is capable of.    We do NOT need your serial number.  That's your's alone to keep for communicating directly to AppleCare.  This is just a user to user forum.  So if you have iMac 4,1 and MacBook Air 5,1 those numbers would be all we need.

Hi, I have an iMac 4,1 and would like to use it with my early 2011 15" MacBook Pro. I tried using ScreenRecycler with JollyFastVNC and I got a window with the Andromeda Galaxy desktop on the iMac (which isn't the desktop I have on my MBP) with an empty desktop. Any idea what I can do? Thanks.

Your best bet for video input is one of Elgato's HD Input solutions if you don' t have a video input port on your computer. And dbserious, if we don't hear back from prihrani, please start a new thread.  You'll get a wider audience, and we'll be able to focus our help on prihrani to solve their problem more quickly unless you have a solution for them.  Elgato's Standard Definition video input only gives you 720 x 480 input resolution.
