My problem is now when I download using the option double click method and the file downloads, when I open the file in VLC, I only hear sound and don't get any video. I have all updated codecs and VLC, and VLC plays all my other previously downloaded videos just fine.

Yes, on Lion it still works. I noticed that youtube sometimes streams directly from servers without possibility to download it. Matbe I'm wrong, I dont know.
But frequently the link IS in activities window, you need to search better.

ya i used this method all the time, i get multiple 1.7mb files instead of one larger one that would say 2 of 30mb ect.. like it was buffering. wonder if it is a safari setting.

I'm still using OS 10.5.8 and am having exactly the problem described above, all activity files are 1.7 mb in size and none are downloadable as flv files from Youtube. Boo hoo! Any thoughts?

maybe not so complex.. most likely problem is that the button disappears 'upon successful download' because your 'remove download list items' prefeference is set that way. See below.. and set 'remove download list items' preference to either 'when safari quits' (like you see beow) or 'manual.' Then the button will persist, and you can find the item easily until you quit safari .. or remove all items from the list manually .. depending on which of the two settings you choose.
I like the 'quit safari' option, because I don't have to do anything to keep the list small and usable; it is cleared out every time I quit safari. And the files themselves persist in my downloads folder if I need to go find them later.

I had this problem and it seems to be 'fixed' by first choosing the highest quality resolution for the YouTube video. In fact, it even downloaded as an .mp4 file - not an .flv file!
