Q: What is the basic requirements to make a server work.

Is there some one to help?

I have been playing around with my new mac mini for a few weeks to see how it works and seems to end up with more questions than i have started with. So back to the basics.

Lets start with a server that is not connected to the internet and will provide all services to a intranet.

  1. Hardware:
    • Server (TCP/IP settings, DNS, ...)
    • switch/router
    • Clients
  2. ...

I think you get the idea. Something basic that someone like me (noob) can use to setup a Lion server and slowly learn and add more complicated stuff as we progress.

I seem to setup everything, but at the end it feels like im missing the on button for the server. It shows green buttons on everything but i only get access to Filesharing and screensharing none of the other services are working. So it may be something obvious i missed along the way, therefore this post. To make a tool that a noob like me can use to make my server work.

Why are you trying to use two internal networks?

    Lets keep it simple.

I am going through the same thing as you.

First thing I did was switch off the wireless and only use the wired network connection.

I am assuming that internet is working via your ISP router without the server.

Do you know how to set a fixed IP address for your LAN on the server? Set it, doesn't really matter what it is. Mr Hoffman suggests a low value, I used a high one on my setup (10.0.0.253 if I remember correct).

Buy a domain name from somewhere (I use Easily.co.uk), doesn't really matter where. Lets assume you pick say ianvr.net.

First thing is in Server App, change the server domain to match what you bought. I would suggest using server.ianvr.net if you bought ianvr.net

After this, your next step is to get DNS working on the server. You do this in server Admin.

Let me know when you get to needing that.

Thank you for also getting in on the action here.

My server is getting its Internet from the Router via Wireless. Its not possible to hardwire it to the server.

I can set up the Fixed address no problem. And i already have a Domain name.

My problem is getting my server to work in the most basic configuration. i have tried just about everything short from reinstalling the Server. I was thinking its the DNS, but i am coming to the realization that this may not be the problem because i cant even get the server to deliver services with 127.0.0.1 / server.local. All the services show green light on all but i only get items that are activated in System Preferences/ Sharing. i.e. web or  file sharing..... The server show in the client as Server icon in the Finder window so something is running.

If i go into Server Admin the top most item is Available servers, mine show (0). I guess that translate to no server. but if i add my server i can connect to it. I think i have confused myself and this server to the point of no return. A reinstall my be the only solution.

MrHoffman again thank you for your answer. I made a mistake in naming it workgroup it should be Subnet Mask. But unfortunately i cant edit it now.

The 172.16.0.0/12 is what im making my router that's connected to the ISP and in-turn provide Internet to my server. I see my Router have allocated a fixed address (192.168.1.254 with the previous settings) 172.16.1.254  i saw this comes up as the Router Address in my Network settings using DHCP so i entered it as my Router on my Manual Settings.

This is what i thought you mentioned with:

"Your gateway router might have a DHCP server pool.  If so, set this to a range of addresses in one of the private IP address blocks.  A subnet in 10.0.0.0/8, or in 172.16.0.0/12 or (less desirably) 192.168.0.0/16."

I will try and figure out the rest and see if i make more sense of things.

No insult taken by your last paragraph, I will get to the point where im going to get this server to work some day. More reading and maybe i will get it figured out.

For now i think i have to try and get the server just to work on server.local and then add the Internet later.

    I have found my problem!

In System Prefrences/Sharing i selected Remote Managment. After i did this all my services started to work.

    So easy if you know.
