If your iMac G4 is pre-2003 it may only have WEP wireless capability. In that event, I'd connect it to the wireless router's LAN port by ethernet to get its internet connection, so you don't have to compromise the security of the rest of your machines wireless network.    See this article:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2256

Any that don't take Extreme will need to be on your LAN port.   Those that do, still will need the network to be open to both 802.11g and 802.11n, and not just 802.11n.  If you have anything that requires a faster 802.11n network, it might be best again to hook up the Mac via the LAN port of the router/modem.  Otherwise your entire wireless network will be bogged down by 802.11g speeds.

thanks; i bought my little mac in 2003-4, and the ethernet packed it in a couple of years ago, so i had the airport card installed, it always worked fine on the old modem. when i click the drop down box for networks, the network we are on only gives the wep option for password, however, if i choose other and enter the network name, i can choose wap2 password, it just doesnt accept it.

By the way, the password is WPA2, not WAP2.    Make sure you are using the correct CaSe for your password.   Also make sure you are within 150 feet (450 meters) of the router, but not within 5 feet (15 meters).
