My computer turned itself off for no reason that I can figure out and when I rebooted everything seemed okay except that the battery icon has an X over it. This is a later 2008 MacBookPro 15" -- first gen multitouch. I'm running Leopard. When I unplug the little green lights on the side appear briefly, blink several times, and then disappear completely.

What does this mean and can I fix it or what more information should I find?

If I can continue to use the computer as long as I'm plugged in I can live with that.

Thanks for any clues.

Hmm, this article says it's archived and says to update to a version of OS X that is older than the one I am using. I had seen this article when I searched before I posted but I was looking for something newer and also an answer about whether I can just use my computer plugged in.

    Thank you though.

That is a bad idea.  Read: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=424052

Before going further, you need to understand the condition of your battery and what those indicators are telling you.

Go to the apple in the upper left corner, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and what does it say about the Condition of the battery, Capacity, Charge remaining, Voltage and Current?

First figure out if your battery has a fault, if the charger has a fault, and then where do you go.

From what that says, you pasted the info from when the battery was not installed.  It would be more helpful to see the info with the battery to know its condition.

If that is WITH the battery then the battery has completely failed to the point that it doesn't register at all...have never seen a case like that before.  If that is the case, you really need to take that MBP in and have it checked out.

It is also strange that it says you are on the AC power source but have zero voltage and zero amperage...normal voltage should be in the range of 12 to 12.5 volts, even on the charger.

Sadly, I copied that info with the battery installed. And I'm using the computer right now for this discussion because it's what I have as a computer. Don't really have a backup to use.

That information pretty much indicates the battery is completely failed or there is a short that is not allowing the computer to even see the battery.  Best solution would be a visit to an Apple genius bar, have them test the computer to make sure it is nothing more than the battery, and replace the battery if you can.

Another possibility, and a good one, is that the battery is not properly seated and therefore is not making a good connection to the computer at the contacts in the battery compartment. And another is that the cable running from those contacts to the logic board has worked loose at its LB end.

Remove the battery and check both sides of its connection for dirt, corrosion and debris. Then reseat it and test again.

Have removed cleaned and reseated battery, no joy. I have a Genius Bar app't for Tuesday and until then I've added a strip  of tape to my mag-safe connector to make it less safe but more likely to stay connected. Save early and often is the way to go.

Just an update since it seems polite to you helpful folks. Yes, my battery was completely dead, shorted somehow. So I got a new one and all is happy.

Thanks for the feedback...always like to know how things work out.  Enjoy your computer now.
