I think you need a dual link dvi cable for resolutions over 1920x1200.

just saw your post; how do you like the Dell display? I have a MacBook Air (mid-2012) and thought about this display rather than the Thunderbolt display. Thank you.

I don't know if it will work with Dell but I have 29" LG ultrawide monitor and it runs full res 2560x1080 extended desktop on MB Pro 17 (i5) as well as on 13" Air (2011) thanks to mini displayport to displayport cable (by Startech, about £5 on ebay). Someone pointed this out in another discussion and it was genius. Even though one laptop has MDP and the other thunderbolt, both work flawlessly with the same cable via the monitor's displayport.
Cable ref: MDP2DPMM3

jevzor, It is really good to know that miniDP to DP really works; thank you!

I'm using a Dell Ultrasharp U2713HM, it's 27". With miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort it gives 2048x1152. I tried the highest 2560x1440 resolution, but it doesn't work.
It would be good to know whether the dual link dvi cable really works to reach 2560x1440 resolution.
