Jan 30, 2012 6:44 PM in response to userremovedby Linc Davis,It's probably a hardware failure. You could try this:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Yes, I did try that previously. Nothing.
Is there a way to determine what kind of hardware failure?

Jan 30, 2012 6:55 PM in response to userremovedby Linc Davis,If possible, run the Apple Hardware Test from the Applications disc that came with the machine. It's not very reliable, but once in a while it comes up with the right answer. If that doesn't work, your only option is to schedule a service visit.

Jan 30, 2012 7:00 PM in response to userremovedby pao1250,This appears to be the NVIDIA GPU equipped MBP... If I had to guess I would say the GPU bit the dust...
Sorry.

Jan 30, 2012 7:50 PM in response to nram78by pao1250,If your Mac is in fact dead you can still pull all your data of the hard drive... just take it out the MBP and use an external enclosure sold everywhere for ~$10-$15 and plug it in another Mac or Linux computer (Windows computers won't read the file system) to pull your info off the drive...
Good luck.

Jan 30, 2012 8:12 PM in response to userremovedby vea1083,★HelpfulI think your MacBook Pro is a "Santa Rosa" model, which was know for its faulty nVidia GPUs. Apple has a KB article where it talks about a "no video" issue and has some recommendations for it. I would suggest having the MBP checked at tthe Apple Store.
You can see the article here:

Good Luck!

Jul 24, 2014 4:56 PM in response to vea1083by userremoved,I want to thank everybody for their support. According to the article sent by vea1083, I have 28 days left of support! I can probably get it fixed for free! I am going to call Apple today.
Again, what an amazing group of people to help out a "poor" school teacher.

Just run to the store... Glad the article helped you! Please tell us how the issue went and make a copy of the article I sent you. This will help the Genius Bar employees to proceed correctly with the issue.
Good Luck!

Jul 24, 2014 4:56 PM in response to vea1083by userremoved,Sadly, the nearest store is 250 miles away. I will have to see if Apple will recommend a local "Apple Authorized" retailer.
Thank you though!

Jul 24, 2014 4:56 PM in response to userremovedby userremoved,WOW!!!
You guys saved me over $850!!!
That sure is one expensive part to replace. Alpha Computers in Richland, WA fixed it, and Apple paid for it.
Awesome!!!
