I have all these setting (including shared disks over WAN, and disk password) but still don't see my TC under shared section when I am out of the local network.

Using the utility Bonjour Browser from the Internet, I can see the TC under Airport Base Station and I can manage the TC remotely. However I cannot see the TC under Apple File Sharing, where I can only find my home computer.

    Refael:

Do you have a double NAT (or any other errors)?

    Fixed after reset !!!

No, I don't have double NAT.

Apparently after installing firmware 7.6.1 and making adjustments to the configuration, pressing Update is not enough.  I went to the menu "Base Station -> Restart" and now I can see my TC form outside (both for configuration and file sharing).

As far as the last part, that sounds exactly what I was doing before enabling sharing over WAN: Open Finder, click my Time Capsule in the side bar, double click the disk to mount it.

Does that mean that now any time I try to access the disk the traffic is going through the internet and not just my home wifi connection? Do I need to enable/disable sharing over WAN in AirPort Utility to switch how it connects?

No, if you "Enable disk over WAN" is what gives you access to your Time Capsule disk over the internet.

I beleive that I have followed all the set-up info correctly. I am using an Airport Extreme via USB with external hard drive, and having no luck accessing it remotely. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated.

Howe.sc, you may try Bonjour Browser to see which deviced can be found. The software is not available at App Store but it can be downloaded from www.tildesoft.com (the application for iOS is available at App Store, but only scans local network).

You should find something like this:

In this example, within the icloud section, the time capsule TC is accesible for Airport configuration and File Sharing. After installing the firmware update 7.6.1 I couldn't find TC under File Sharing, but restaring the TC it was fixed.  After playing a lot with network options in one of the computer, I couldn't see any devices under icloud section, but restarting the computer everything reappeared as usual.

For some reason, you need NAT enabled and double NAT (at least in my case) screwed Back to my Mac up for the Time Capsule ONLY.  Everything else was still accessible.  So if you have a VoiP or your modem is also a Router, you should make sure NAT is off and the first thing that assigns any IP addresses is the airport express/extreme/TC.  If you can see your other Macs but not your TC, your problem is likely a NAT issue.

I also found that hard resets are sometimes needed for TC after doing an update.   Not sure why that is.

    Hi All.

I have been trying various things as found in the discussion community.

    I have the following

    Mac Mini running latest software

Airport Extreme (running latest software) with USB harddrive; wired to BT Home Hub 2 (So APBS is acting like a NAS drive i think?)

    Ipad 2

    Various Iphones.

What I am trying to do

I want my parents to have access to the USB HDD to get the latest kids photos. They only have PC laptops and any instructions that I find only seem to refer to Mac OS.

I think the Back to my Mac via iCloud would be the easiest.

Can some simply guide me through how best to do this. I have tried Back to my Mac in the Airport utility (V6.0 (I also have V5.6)) by putting in my apple ID and password which shows as green.

But then what do I tell my parents with PC to do? Where do they go on the internet?

Also when I go to iCloud.com and click on the Find my iphone the iPad, Mac Mini and iPhone appear. The Airport Extreme does not.

I feel I am close but just need one more thing which I am clearly missing.

    Your help would be appreciated.

You cannot do it from a PC.. and it probably has to be a Time Capsule not a AEBS with USB disk.

So there is now way for a remote PC user to remotely access my AEBS hard drive???

Not through icloud which is the point of the thread.

Not via AFP because that is unavailable to the PC.

Not via SMB in any normal way because it is blocked by Internet.. being the greatest security risk of all time.

    You have several issues.

AEBS does not have dynamic DNS.. so unless you have a static public IP how does the PC connect?

All means of communication to the hard disk are blocked. To get around those you need to use special ports for SMB.. but it is still wide open to the rest of the world. In my worst nightmare I would not recommend it to a person who valued their stuff.. you are simply trying to hide behind a different gate when a person can use 100000 bots to knock on every gate you have in 2secs..

The right way is vpn.. if you want to personally host your material. You need to get a vpn router and bridge the AEBS.

Or post the photos on the cloud yourself to a normal service anyone can see.

If it is merely for the kids photos that is what I would do.

Hey Rafael! I am having this issue right now too.

Just to understand: You have the Time Capsule Bridge Only?

Do we need to activate Back to my Mac on the computer or only on the Time Capsule?

I always get in the computer when i activate: Set up router for better performance

    Any thoughts? Thanks!

OK I have sorted my issue on this issue that has been going on for a year and it was so simple.

ANSWER: A very good Internet connection (fibre optic)

My problem was that I wanted to access the Time capsule when I was on holiday or away from my network (orange home broadband UK with 3mbps download). I could access my iMac from my macbook fine on other Internet connections but the time capsule did not want to show in the finder.  After endless phone calls to Apple senior advisors and data captures from them nothing really worked.  Here are a few things I tried (cant be bothered to list everything):

I tried the Time Capsule on my mums Virgin media network (didn't work 3mbps download)

I tried bridge mode on my router and letting the Time capsule do the DHCP setting

I tried every other option in airport utilities 6.1 and nothing would ever work as I would either end up losing my internet connection or I would end up with double Nat issues.

I tried signing in and out of icloud and that did nothing even though the lights were green on the status.

After all of these things were tried I finally managed to get apple to send a replacement because after a year it was then only thing left to try but this still didn't work. I tried this Saturday the 22nd of September 2012.

My neighbor had BT fibre optic installed this week so I asked if I could try the time capsule on her internet connection and BINGO it work.  I could access the time capsule from my macbook via my home internet and tethering 3G connection.  In airport utility my setting are BASE STATION = Signed into icloud INTERNET = DHCP NETWORK = Bridge mode   This was with bridge mode in the  DISK = file sharing ticked (no access over wan option available).

Please let me know if anyone else sorts their issue out with a faster internet
