Q: 17" Powerbook G4 1Ghz, no sound/popping noises?

Hi,

I just picked up an immaculate Powerbook G4 17" 1ghz (1st gen).

There is however no sound from either the internal speakers although everything shows as correct in  the system preferences sound pane.

It sees the internal speakers and switches to headphones when i pu some in.

Thers is no mac startup sound either, all i get is a popping noise from the speakers when i turn the mac on.

I've checked the obvious, volume and mute etc but nothing.

I popped the top off and all cables look present and correct and all look plugged in.

I'd guess this is a logic board problem as i've also had problems installing the OS from discs although this may be the superdrive itself as it keeps spitting discs out and making loud strange noises!

If anyones had similer issues and had success by replacing the sound board or something i'd love to hear about it.

Thanks.

Have you reset the PMU and PRAM:

    PMU: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431

    PRAM:

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
