Try restting your iPad.
Reset iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off".
If that doesn't cure the problem try Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.

I tried both of these, the first didn't work at all. The second however did allow the house network to show, but I was unable to sign in and now it has disappeared again. Thanks for your help though, I appreciate it.

Test your iPad on some other networks (Starbucks, library, etc.). If it doesn't work there either it may have developed a hardware problem.

As this happened with your laptop as well, this would indicate to me that it has something to do with your network setup/router and not necessarily your iPad or laptop. Any recent changes or updates to your router, interference, DHCP address conflicts, etc., would be my guess. You should still try your iPad with some other network.
