Q: Logic Pro hangs for 10-15 seconds when recording or playing

Just in the last few days Logic Pro has started hanging (beachball) for 10 or 15 seconds before it records or plays.  This makes it unusable for work which I am trying to do at the moment.

I have tried restarting, changing project locations and trashing preferences all to no avail.

Anyone else experienced this?

Point taken about the real audio device and mic - I'd be stoked if you could reccomend a couple of each as I am ready to upgrade.  I am primarily a broadcast editor/GFX guy but I am getting into home recording and would like to make sure I've got a quality setup.

Thanks so much for your other thoughts - I'll be trying this right away.

    No problem..

I know of someone who has the same PR4 TB array.. and has had some data corruption problems with the drives.

I usually suspect new technolgy but it seems like your system is solid otherwise.

It's very possible it's one of those combination problems that are hard to diagnose.. Like between a USB audio device and the R4 driver. (does the Pegusus use  drivers?)

I'm curious about recording to the internal drive with the R4 disconnected from your system.

    ****.  That backfired...

I unfortunately (OK stupidly) turned off the RAID having logged out - not shut down.  Just a blainless moment.  The system complained that the drive was not ejected.

Now my RAID has a troubling little "1" after it's name when I look at it's properties in the finder info window.  Worse still, i can't login to my user account which lives on the RAID due to this pesky little "1" throwing the system off.  I try to login and after some time it says "cannot access that account at this time".

    Ouch.

The home directory is being relocated internally as I type.  It's going to be a long night...

I should re-iterate that this is the first issue i have ever had witht he RAID.

Having said all that, I don't think the issue would be between the USB audio interface and the RAID as I had the audio interface unplugged for most of the time.  Also I tested the without the mic plugged in too (using the internal mic) and the problem was still there.

I'll let you know how it goes when I get a change to try all this sans RAID

All good now.  I have come ful circle.  When this issue was originally resolved I had success after opening a test account locally, and after having done that I thought I should move my home directory back to the local drive.

But at that point the restarting of the RAID seemed to have solved all issues.

Now I am completely convinced that Logic has an issue with the home directory being on an external drive - or at least on my RAID - and I have perminently moved the home directly back to the local drive.

Thanks for your help Pancenter - still up for hearing your recommendations on a decent Mic and Audio interface

Interesting solution, glad to hear you have it working properly.

The Rode mic you have has quite decent specs, it's not a bad unit. The problem with single input USB device is splitting the Input and Output over different audio devices, there's a few subtle problems with this regarding digital clock sync. An audio device works best when the digital clock is hardware synced to both input and output. (As in a self contained audio interface)

With a USB mic and Logic's built-in-audio a type of software sync is used, usually the audio at the output has to be resampled in the background to match the sample clock rate of the input.

Besides, the Mac's audio output is noisy and doesn't have an even frequncy response, nothing you would want to use for reference listening. However.. for what you're doing now that setup may be fine. If you wish to stick with what you have for now, create and Aggregate device for each of your setups. Usually you will set the audio input device as the clock master and the output to resample.

The most resonably priced and technically solid (great drivers) for Mac are made my MOTU (Mark of the Unicorn).

Mics... it depends on your price range.

    Hi

So, with your 'Home' folder back on the boot disk, you are still storing and running your Logic Projects on the RAID, or are you saving to the Home folder?

That's it CCTM - you nailed it.

My place for recording was within my home directory so it turns out it wasn't my home directory being on the raid that was causing the delays but the fact that I the projects was lacated on the Raid that was causing the dealys.

Just checked it out and that is indeed the deal.

Project on the RAID = issue present.

Project on the Internal Drive = no issue.

Note it is not that it is nor whether I am recording onto the raid or not that is the issue, it is if the project is based on the RAID that is the factor.

    We have the culprit.

Going back to one of my earlier posts.. you're 100% all the raid drives are formatted Mac OSX extended. (I'm sure they must be)

Logic used to exhibit the exact same behavior when recording to an external drive that wasn't formatted Mac OS Extended.

The problem probably lies in the firmware (and/or driver) communication between the Mac and the Pegasus, Logic is not recognizing the format and doesn't know how much space it needs to allocate for recording. (another weird Logic quirk).

I'm still thinking a firmware update to the Pegasus controller might fix the problem, you might want to let them know what you're experiencing.

p.s. That's the best Mic you can get anywhere close to the price range.

Yes they are formatted osx extended (- also journaled, does that make a difference?)

I will definately be looking into the firmware thing.  It's not easy to find the support on the website unfortunately but I will dig a little deeper.

You can format drives used for large files (like audio/video) with Journaling Off, as a journaled drive will not protect large files from corruption.

As a matter of fact... (shhh, don't tell Apple) I have all my drives, including my system drive formatted with journaling off, makes for a speedier, perky system.   I back up on a regular basis and I've never had a corrupt drive or partition where journaling would've helped. Journaling was originally designed for servers and mainly affects small files.. I did some research and talked with one of the guys I know at Apple.. it's virtually useless for large file storage and will slow things down.

Last Bit of follow-up:  Pancenter, my Mic you reccomended arrived today and it is *outstanding*.  Thanks so much for the reccomendation.

I am going with a Duet2 as an audio interface after reading many reviews which compared it to the Motu but preferred Duet2's sound quality (although the Motu has more functionality).

Thanks again for the great advice.
