Steve, I can definitely see this patch working, but, two questions for you, or anyone else who can answer:

1.) How can I see what driver I currently have?  I believe, given the date of my Mac I do have Atheros hardware/driver, but where can I check to make sure?

2.) Upon downloading the driver version provided by the link, it says "drop on Utility app". What exactly does that mean?

Thanks for the link, this seems like a logical fix.  I'd like to try it, and I hope it works.  Thanks again.

    Hi Michael,

you have to go to apple - more information - system report - network - Wi-Fi

I did follow the instruction - no wifi issue anymore - what I have notice though is that  the airdrop option is  not available anymore.

    Hi Michael,

On the top left corner go in to >about my mac. You should then see system info. Once open down the left hand side look for >wifi. Click on it and you will then see info about which Atheros driver you have. I believe anything during 2009 build will be 3.2. Lion uses 4.0 which is why the problem exists.  Once you've downloaded you'll see three boxes, drag the left onto the right. You know when you've done it correctly because it'll ask for your password etc.

I will say this though, another user quite rightly warned me that loading a later driver may well interfere with future apple upgrades, who knows. Also I believe once loaded, air drop wont show, this being a feature of the later Lion driver! What I can say though is I have my web working perfectly.

    Cheers.

I've been lurking here since last summer when I noticed this problem. At first I thought my new service provider and new router were the culprits, but one Google showed me they weren't. I've tried just about every idea on this thread, to no avail. What worked for me was running a constant ping. That works, but I'm annoyed that I have to do it. So yesterday I downloaded the upgrade, and today I'm spending my first long-ish period at the computer. I'll see how it goes. Thanks to everyone for exploring this issue and offering such helpful solutions. I have my fingers crossed today.

same problem... after the 10.7.3 update, Wifi connexions are often lost, particulary after wake up

    Before, I HAD NO PROBLEM

very annoying, my WiFi network hasn't changed at all

Be very careful using the fix described by Rys Sommefeldt, where you downgrade drivers.  I did that last time and -- while it fixed the dropping issue -- it created a new issue where WIFI was dead upon wake from sleep.  Every time!

I emailed Rys and received no response.   So I had to use TimeMachine to get back my old settings.

    Beware!

That said -- I want to confirm for whoever is reading that I upgraded to 10.7.3 and the problem not only persists, it got worse (i.e. more frequent dropping).

    llou_sfx,

can you turn off Bluetooth and see if autujoin still fails ? What channel are you using on your wireless network ?

Steve,  thanks for the detailed instructions and forewarning,  I appreciate the response.  I haven't quite decided if I will downgrade the driver, and, unfortunately, the response from mbwd warning about the Wifi being dead upon waking from sleep doesn't make me feel much better.  My next logical question would be if you downgrade to an earlier driver, and you find it does interfere with future updates, can you reinstall the currently "bad" driver, assuming future updates will have addressed and remedied the current issue?  Also, let me ask, has anyone downloaded the combo updater?  I understand that you can still download it even after having installed the most current Lion update.  At one point, I'm hoping that Apple releases an update that does actually fix the issue.  As a somewhat novice to tinkering around with my Mac, I get concerned that I will change something that will give me a bigger problem than I had.  One thing we haven't discussed though is how incessant is the problem for everyone.  For example, with my Mac, I can maintain a connection even after the system is in sleep mode for up to I'd say 6-8 hours.  Interestingly though, it's usually when the system sits overnight that upon waking from sleep I have to manually reconnect.  As far as dropping the connection, it has happened to me, but I'd say maybe once per session, sometimes not at all.  Part of me is thinking that this is just a problem that we will have to live with until Apple issues an appropriate fix, but, then again, I suppose it depends on how badly it is affecting each individual user.

    Hi everybody,

I bought a MBA 5 months ago (Lion built-in) and since the beginning I started to experiment these dropping connections from time to time. I didn't have an Atheros chipset.

I tried every solution posted here until I decided to go to Apple Store, here in Madrid, and the solution was the replacement for a brand new. Since then, I havent had any issue with this problem. They were absolutely aware of this trouble.

So if your Mac is less than a year or you have Apple Care, I encourage you to take it to Apple and try to get a new one.

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards.

    wifiguru,

I can't turn off my bluetooth, because I would't be albe to control my iMac any more.

Really this wifi problem dead from sleep is very annoying.

Anyway, I will not downgrade any driver, it worked before, it should still work !

Add me to this list... I upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard 2 days ago and have been experiencing the same WiFi behaviors: periodic searching, dropped connections and dead connection on wake from sleep. While I feel foolish for not checking in advance (but really, how much research can you be expected to do on potential failures of vendor provided upgrades 3 patchsets past introduction? I was focussing on application incompatabilities...) and finding what is obviously a huge networking problem, I also do not understand why Apple has not been able to resolve it long before now. Very dissapointing.

Go into "System Preferences", select "Energy Saver", and then select "Power Adapter".  Slide the "Computer Sleep" slider all the way to the right so that your computer never goes to sleep.  Report back here if that makes it work reliably again.

Believe me, I understand that you want it to work right. I'm just trying to get people to "investigate" the issue and report the right information to Apple so that they can fix the stupid problem.  If you just stand around and say "my computer doesn't work", there is no way that Apple could possibly investigate the millions of possible combinations of issues to decide what is not working on your computer.

I, like many others, don't have this problem.  It seems clear to me, at this point, that Apple can't solve the problem given the information that they have.  So, either sit around and wait for something to happen, or jump in and be a part of the solution.  It's your choice, you decide what you want to happen next.  More of the same, or something different?  I believe the saying is "How can you expect something different if you just keep doing the same thing?"
