I have reinstalled 10.7.2 with combined bundle. I have repaired the authorisations. I have installed 10.7.3. I have reinitialised the CMS. I have trashed the power management pref file. Now i don't know what else to do.

When I close the laptop, the disk goes on and the fan gets very fast.

What's wrong?

Try running the Apple Hardware Test.  Even though you are running Lion, if your mac came with a different version of OS X, insert disc 2 (assuming you have the discs), which contains the AHT and see if it finds anything.

I've only got snow Leoprad DVD. ANd when I boot on the DVD, there's nothing like AHT.

I've just tried something I should've tried earlier.

I have an external HD with 10.7.1

When I boot on it, the computers does go to sleep mode, no problem.

What can we deduce from that?

I had issues with sleep where the screen would blank but the external hard drive wouldn't shut down. While debugging a 10.7.3 wifi issue (wouldn't connect on waking up), Apple had me delete the power mgmt plist file as well as other configuration files, which, in talking with a Senior Apple advisor we assumed caused the incomplete sleep issue. My solution was to reinstall 10.7.2, then install the combo 10.7.3 update. The combo 10.7.3 update is different than what Software Update provides. With the combo update, the build should be 11D50b. Don't forget to repair permissions before and after applying the combo update, too. Sleep is working normally now.

    Thanks Greg, I'll try that.

But did you downgrade from 10.7.3 to 10.7.2? (I don't know how to do that) Then installed the combo 10.7.3?

Or did you just reinstall 10.7.3 combo over 10.7.3?

Or maybe I should reinstall 10.7.0 and then 10.7.3 combo.

First thing I did was install the 10.7.3 combo update over 10.7.3, since it's a different build (11D50b versus 11D50). That didn't fix it.

I happen to have 10.7.2 which is what downloaded when I first installed Lion, so it was easy to reinstall with it. I would think installing any level of 10.7 and then the combo update should work.

Shutdown completely you Mac , turn off from main power for 2mins ,

Start up MacPro as soon as hear the noise : HOLD DOWN : COMMAND+OPTION +P+R at the same untill you 2 or 3 Click ( Knocking sound )inside your Mac , is not that loud just pay  attention and then realese and your mac will rebooting , leave it alone its will start as normal , play around and then try to put it at sleep , Go apple logo - sleep ..., wait and see the miracle , Apple wanted charge £ 35 , but i  figured out myself throught another guy in apple community ,Hopefully this will help out too .

I've had the iMac not sleeping' problem for ages but I think I may have fixed it - I just don't know how! It will be one of two things. First, I upgraded to the latest Mountain Lion fix (Aug 2012) and second, I cleared two items out of my HD>Library>LaunchAgents folder. One I wasn't sure about, the other shouldn't have been there so I cleared them both. All has been well since but it's early days yet!
