For me... a pain in my butt, but an easy fix.  I have a MBP and was trying to hook it up to my new LED 32" samsung TV.  I kept getting the blue flash... then my TV would flutter occasionally, then say 'no signal' or 'mode not supported'.  I tried everything everyone was talking about with different resolutions... nothing.  Then I put my Laptop in my lap (go figure) and realized that when the miniDP - HDMI adapter was bent upward, it worked.  Then I realized is was just the cheap adapter... but it works fine now as long as I have the HDMI side propped up almost verticle.  I'll probably get a new adaptor, but I'm stoked this works for now.  So try messing around with the angle of the adaptor cord - it may sound crazy, but fixed a very big problem... good luck.

I found the solution, hope it'll work for you guys.

Just unplug the Macbook power adapter, then connect HDMI cord to Mac and TV as usual. Done!

You may plugging the Mac adapter, once the TV display your screen.

Definitely a trend! Spent a lot of time reading reviews and posts for a similar problem, before and after buying the NEET minidisplay port to HDMI for my 2011 mac air. The NEET was the only one with no apparent fault in the reviews, so went for it. It worked with my old HDTV after a little bit of dabbling, and tends to work most of the time. (it's on for three movies a day so heavy use)

When it doesn't, it does one of two things: Either I get no sound on the TV and have to play around, like unplug the adapter and replug it, then reopen my movie, which works most of the time, or I get a blue screen, no visual or audio.

From what I have read, it can only be the adapters. They are simply not quite up to the job just yet. This morning I realised that when the adapter refuses to work, it does something else in the meantime: warm up! To the point that the plastic started to melt!

The weird thing is, there isn't a single review out there mentionning overheating or even the slightest problem. The amazon reviews on this product are 100% positive. Is this possible? I am dubious. I have contacted NEET and will post their answer if there is one, in the meantime, if anyone discovers the perfect adapter that works and stays that way, LET US KNOW!!

If you connect the MacBook Pro using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo sound system if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI doesn't carry audio unless you have the Mid 2010 model 7,1 and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.

There is a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter that can combine video and audio to HDMI.

any ideas as to why my tv isnt in the sound output box ?

Depending on the year of your MBP, it may not be possible. I think audio output via HDMI was first supported in 2010. Someone out here could verify this.

    Hey all,

Just thought I'd post about my troubles, and solution for me, in case it helps someone else!

I have a 2011 Macbook Air 13", connecting to a brand new 42" Panasonic Plasma, using a Mini DP to HMDI adaptor and an HDMI cable to the telly.

    The problem I was having:

    • Would connect adaptor and cable, TV would receive image but almost straight away would start flickering and jumping, then would just turn to snow. Occaisionally, image would come back for a second and then repeat the problem.
    • Tried a different HDMI, no luck.
    • If I lowered the resolution of output, the effect lessened but was still there.
    • If I lowered the refresh rate, the effect lessened but was still there.
    • If I lowered both (24Hz and 640x480) then it was stable, but obviously pointless.
    • Connected other computer (PC) via same HDMI to same TV, worked fine.
    • Connected other Macbook (Pro) to same TV, with same adaptor and cable, same problem.
    • Connected Macbook Air to friend's 32" Panasonic LCD, same adaptor and cable, worked fine! This was the bit that confused me the most...

So! I called Apple. They told me that they had no idea, but it was possibly the graphics card. I told them it wasn't... it was working fine on other TVs, and lots of other people had the same issue. They told me to take it to the store and they have a look.

Took it to the store, they had no idea, wanted to take it away and run full diagnostic to see if they could find anything. If they couldn't, they'd replace the logic board (with graphics card). I asked "What if that doesn't work?". I got a blank look and a shrug

I figured the only thing I hadn't explicitly tried / double tested was swapping the adaptor. So, I bought the one sold in the Apple store (iWires Mini DP to HDMI) and it worked perfectly... Go figure. Still no idea why my crappy original adaptor worked at the same res on another TV, but I'm happy enough now!

    Bonjour

I am using a IWIRE MDP to HDMI cable from Apple. The set up guide was very helpful and it wors FAN TAS TICALLY well. However: about every 20 minutes, I lose my color picture, all I get is a faded light blue image of the movie on my TV screen. I unplug the MDP and replug it and I'll have no problem... for 20 minutes or so. What gives? Help!

    Same Same, but Different:

I'm running two macbook pros with different results.

    LG 27" Monitor

Cheapo $10 Mini DP>HDMI Cable from Ebay

    Early 2010 MBP:

    NIVIDIA GeForce 9400M / 9600M GT

    OS X 10.6.8

Works perfectly first time, every time, no matter what screen resolution or gfxstatus.

    Early 2011 MBP:

AMD Radeon HD 6490M / Intel HD Graphics 3000

    OS X 10.6.8

Will not work, no matter what.

    Problem:

Mac recognises the monitor and allows me to access the mirror display / screen resolution etc.

LG Monitor stays black and goes into sleep mode.

    I've Tried:

Changing mac resolution and monitor resolution / changing mirror display options (toggled with almost every option)

Installed gfx card status and tried every option.

Taken out and put back in all cables.

With dynamic switching, and 720ish screen res, restarted the computer

    Unplugged Monitor and repeated above.

Updated from 10.6.6 to no avail.

    My remaining options:

    Buy a better adapter/cable

    install an earlier os.

take it in to apple and ask very nicely for help

Just thought it was interesting that the only difference here is graphics cards.

I'll let you know if a shiny new cable does the job.

I have fixed the problem by returning the Mini display port to the shop and got a new one. They also suprised since they did not have the same problem before. Now, everything works like a charm!
